Restaurant recommendations Manchester

Hello, we are going to an event at the Palace Theatre in Manchester (so city centre) in a couple of weeks’ time, and I’d like some restaurant recommendations for the surrounding area (we’ll be driving in). I really don’t know Manchester very well and a quick search of Google maps doesn’t show anything obvious. Any ideas? We like most cuisines, particularly Chinese or barbecue type places. Budget is mid-range...

You're right next to China town there, so I'd have a wander and pick your favourite. Yang Sing is one of the more famous ones.

Rudy's Pizza. Best pizza I've ever had and ridiculously good value. The desserts are fabulous too and the staff are lovely.

QuimJongUn · 27/09/2019 10:46

Rudy's is only about a ten minute walk from where you'll be, too.

doodleygirl · 27/09/2019 10:49

Rudy's is fab. I would also recommend Dishoom, delicious Bombay food - nothing like a typical Indian restaurant.

paddingtonbearsmarmalade · 27/09/2019 10:53

I echo @doodleygirl Rudy’s pizza is great as is Dishoom. I don’t know Chinatown very well but as PP have said if you like Chinese food you’ll definitely find something good there.

The Ivy for glam? Ditto 20 Stories.
Mr Coopers at the Midland.

Johnsonsfiat · 27/09/2019 10:57

Another Rudy's recommendation, the best pizza ever and cheap.
Don Giovanni is comfortable. I like El Gato Negro
tapas.
Can't go wrong with Hawksmoor if you like steaks, but it's expensive.
And we have The Ivy now.

Johnsonsfiat · 27/09/2019 10:58

You might have a 30 min wait if Rudy's is busy

Johnsonsfiat · 27/09/2019 11:00

Asha's Indian is very good and nicely furnished but a little expensive.
Also, Mr Cooper's in the Midland Hotel is good.

CuteOrangeElephant · 27/09/2019 11:02

I'm quite partial to Yard and Coop. Can't go wrong with chicken and chips Grin

I love Rudy's too!!

Silentlysinking101 · 27/09/2019 11:11

It's a bit further out but Albert's shed at castlefield is amazing

QuimJongUn · 27/09/2019 11:23

@Johnsonsfiat last time I was there we had a 25 minute wait, but we popped next door for a beer and they texted us when our table was ready. Was definitely worth the wait!

We like Crazy Pedro's too, but it's a bit of a Marmite place is CP's.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 27/09/2019 11:27

San Carlo in deansgate

Comefromaway · 27/09/2019 11:33

We had a lovely Italian meal at Cibo when we went to see BOM. It was a bit further away from the theatre but we couldn't get into Don Giovanni (same owners but a lot closer) due to booking late.

Nononononono33 · 27/09/2019 11:33

Thanks everyone, all great suggestions. I had thought of Yang Sing (as I’ve heard or it) but wasn’t sure if it was still a good place to go. I had no idea there was a branch of the Ivy! We have been to other San Carlo restaurants and enjoyed them so that’s an option too. Off to do some research!

There is an amazing Thai place called That’s Thai nearish Victoria
It’s in a horrible area but the food is incredible

GoodJobSteve · 27/09/2019 11:59

You're not far from Samsi for Japanese. Not been in a while, but always had a good meal there.

Johnsonsfiat · 27/09/2019 12:37

The Ivy is a 10/15 min walk from the Palace Theatre but woud be lovely. Great service and the ground brasserie is cheaper than the restaurant upstairs. I'd book though.

Constantlurker · 27/09/2019 13:27

Go to refuge at the principal hotel. It's pretty much next door to the theatre and absolutely beautiful. It has an indoor garden area. Honestly even if you don't eat in there just go for a drink. Gorgeous atmosphere

Johnsonsfiat · 27/09/2019 13:28

Yes-agree with Constantlurker

Queenonfleek · 27/09/2019 13:29

Yes refuge every time

DaveGrohlsBeard · 27/09/2019 13:33

Kala is amazing. Really delicious bistro food.

resipsa · 27/09/2019 17:18

Heard/read rave reviews for Refuge - need to go.

JemimaTab · 27/09/2019 18:36

Kala on King St is excellent, and lovely staff too.
