Baby sounds hoarse when crying.

Baby DS is ten months old. He started nursery recently and has had a runny nose pretty much the whole time. He’s also had loose nappies at times. However, he is also teething.

He’s struggling at night and often wakes up crying. His cries sound like he is losing his voice. It’s been like this for a few days and so has the teething. Is this a teething thing? Googling doesn’t seem to bring up any link.

Could possibly be silent reflux.
My DS had silent reflux caused by CMPA, we only realised because he had a massive flare up after starting nursery. He was mostly breastfed but when I went back to work and he started nursery, we gave him more formula (I did express but not enough) and that's when his reflux got bad.
His main symptom was distress at night, he sounded very hoarse when he cried. He also had loose nappies and hated lying down. Congestion can be a symptom too as the body produces mucus when it's reacting to an allergen.

It could be croup, does he have a cough like a barking seal? It is usually worse at night. Most children get over it in a week without concern but it can be very serious and cause breathing difficulties so be vigilant. If it was to be more serious it’s quickly treated with a dose of steroids.

I was about to say croup as well

Bronchiolitis ? Is he gasping or sucking in around his ribs when he coughs.

Mummoomoocow · 26/09/2019 21:55

Christ be on the lookout for croup! Seriously look it up ASAP. My sister nearly died

Hotpinkangel19 · 26/09/2019 21:56

@Mummoomoocow so did my son a year ago. People assume it's just noisy breathing and not serious.

NameChange30 · 26/09/2019 21:58

OP didn't say anything about coughing?

Heartofglass12345 · 26/09/2019 22:00

Apparently loose nappies and runny nose aren't symptoms of teething. Does he have a cough or anything? Hopefully it's just a cold, my son gets one as soon as he starts back to school Hmm

EchoLimaYankee · 26/09/2019 22:44

Thanks all. No coughing at all. Some heavy breathing at times but not croupy at all.

@NameChange30 I don’t think it could be cmpa because he’s been formula fed for a while now.

I just want him to feel better. I can’t decide whether a trip to the doctors is in order or he’s just under the weather.

It is possible for them to have silent reflux by itself (and not caused by CMPA).

Might not be that of course.

Hi,
Just wondering what was the outcome for your baby? My 8 month old for the last week has sounded hoarse when crying, no other symptoms except for teething.
ThanksSmile
