What is it like? How did you get into it? I am considering options for a career change/development and this type of job has caught my interest because

  • I currently work in an Estate Agent so vaguely related
  • I am very organised and a good communicator (used to do an Acc Man role in a different field Marketing which has some parallels)
  • There appears to be low barriers to entry - a 2 year p/t online MSc seems to be enough to get started
  • There are lots of building companies active in my area I could approach for job shadow/work experience
  • Earning potential seems great!

Any insights would be much appreciated :)

DH is... sort of. He has an engineering degree and a huge wallet of vocational quaifications.

It depends on what kind of site and how happy you are to have legal respsonsibilty for various aspects of the work done. Surveyors are relied upon for many aspects of construction - DH for example, has responsbility for a number of sites along railway lines... lots of scariness and a lot of peope who try t presude him "It will be alright", palcing every traveller and workman in possible danger, as well as those who go well OTT, costing thousands of poound more than needed.

But he enjoys it!
