4 month old i really need to get into a routine but i have no idea where to begin can someone please help or advise what they do/did? Thanks so much. Baby gets so over tired and upset and I’m really struggling to get into a routine. Thank you.

My little one is now 19 months so a while ago but I remember writing down his "routine" for a number of days, once written down I noticed there was a pattern in what time he was feeding, napping every .... hours and then could plan things to compliment his routine ie morning walk before or during his nap etc.

Not all babies NEED a routine, but spotting the signs of tiredness and getting them down to sleep is important whether it happens by the clock or seemingly randomly.

I haven't done a formal "routine" with either of my babies but they both sort of fell into their own rhythm at 3-4 months. DS2's is dictated to an extent by DS1's wake up times, trips to nursery etc, but whatever we're doing I know that at the moment he can only go 1.5ish hours between sleeps, so as that time approaches I'm watching for him seeming unsettled, rubbing eyes, glazing over etc. As soon as that happens I try to get him down to sleep either in the pushchair if we're out, or in his cot at home. Blanket, white noise, whatever it takes to settle him. I try not to feed to sleep (EBF) but some babies, need this more (including my DS1). So I have a rough idea in my head of times he might need a sleep, but go off his cues rather than the clock.

I don't plan daily activities around his routine, but I don't tend to go many places where I can't either put him down or at least put him in a sling when needed!
