Quick! Flight advice - can I do this?

Has anyone ever landed at an airport, turned around and got back on the same flight back to the original destination?

DH was meant to collect us today from abroad. Flight back to the UK is tomorrow. M5 crash, he's going to miss his flight. Can he fly tomorrow, land and 'pick us up' while we get on the flight back? I have 2 under 2 so can't fly on my own. I worry he'll have to go through checks etc and there won't be time. But they might make special concessions for the situation (skip queues etc.) or it might be a bit like a transfer where you don't have to go through security again.

CalL the airline you're flying with.

bunnypenny · 23/09/2019 07:16

What airport is he flying to? It may be possible but he’ll only be able to take hand luggage.

PotteringAlong · 23/09/2019 07:20

Of course you can fly on your own with 2 under 2 Hmm

I thought under twos needed a lapbelt? In which case she cant.

TokenGinger · 23/09/2019 07:24

@PotteringAlong Under 2s do not get a seat of their own and have to sit on the parents' laps. How do you propose she does that with two?

Boobiliboobiliboo · 23/09/2019 07:27

Pretty sure he’ll have to leave arrivals (going through passport control and customs) and then go back through departures (security and passport control). What’s the gap between the flight arriving and departing?

Grannybags · 23/09/2019 07:28

As suggested above, call your airline. They will have suggestions that people on here won’t have thought of. You can’t be the only person to need to fly with two under two.

bunnypenny · 23/09/2019 07:28

She can buy a seat for one of the under twos. So one has a seat, the other is on her lap.

Weepingwillows12 · 23/09/2019 07:28

Surely it's just like getting a connecting flight. You follow for connections rather than going back through security then arrive back in post security departures and go to the new flight. Which airport is it? It usually takes at least an hour to turn around a plane so bags off, refuel, restock food, bags in etc.

bunnypenny · 23/09/2019 07:28

Also what you’re suggesting is called a “back to back”. It is possible in some airports, but not all.

TheCanterburyWhales · 23/09/2019 07:29

Yes, you can. Don't know the logistics but one of our unaccompanied minors' accompanier does it. He takes some kids back to Italy, goes out to pick the next one's up and is back in the evening.
Needs planning to make sure the timings are OK He couldn't make it if turnaround time is like Ryanair.
So ring the airline now! Good luck!

Outtheforest · 23/09/2019 07:29

If the return flight is booked as one ticket then he can check in for both in the UK. He probably wont be allowed to stay on the plane due to security and it'll be like a transfer. Depending on which country hes meeting you in will depend on whether there is security but if their is and the time is short usually theirs fast lanes/people to escort you through.
Do you know how much time between him landing and you taking off?

PotteringAlong · 23/09/2019 07:32

tokenGinger well she has a seat that her husband has so she has two seats between them. Under 2’s can sit on their own seat, they don’t have to be on a parents lap. It’s not like aeroplanes ban people from flying with twins alone so she will be fine.

Whoseagooddoggiethen · 23/09/2019 07:40

Blush You would think me, with twins, would have copped this oops

TidaQuel · 23/09/2019 07:40

Really? Have caa rules changed so under 2s don’t now have to be on adults lap?

You’d definitely need to speak to the airline to see if it’s possible. Easyjet only have 20 minute turnarounds so you’d need to be first off, through security, immigration and back to check in at -45 minutes before flight departs? I think boarding has closed before the flight lands? But there may a way around it with prior notice.

CherryPavlova · 23/09/2019 07:44

Yes, speak to airline about flying alone. No reason not to as you’ve paid for two seats and one can have seat next to you.

bunnypenny · 23/09/2019 07:45

As said above you can buy a seat for an under two. However if the husband is a no show for the flight, there is no guarantee that his seat will end up being spare. She will need to buy a seat specifically for the baby.

chemenger · 23/09/2019 07:46

When I flew with under twos, admittedly a long time ago they had to sit on a parent’s knee for takeoff and landing, when did that change? You could book a seat for them but even with a car seat they had to move to a lap for takeoff and landing.

HomewardHound · 23/09/2019 07:47

I’ve done it on visa trips. Touched the wall, turned around and flown back. I had an hour turnaround though.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 23/09/2019 07:48

Won't she need a special harness for that? My understanding was unless in the special seat/harness, they have to be on parents lap for landing , takeoff and whenever seat belt is on.

sofato5miles · 23/09/2019 07:48

Most airlines will not let one adult fly long haul with 2 under 2 as a matter of protocol to the poster with the snidey martyr conplex

I know as I lived overseas when mine were little

GinandManic · 23/09/2019 07:59

If airline allows 2 x infants ti travel with 1 adult then do a name change on dhs ticket. Will save the cost of a new seat (although there will be a charge) and retain the seat as opposed to the dh being a no show.

PotteringAlong · 23/09/2019 08:03

They will let you. You might need to have one of them in an airline approved car seat for take off and landing on their own seat but they will let you do it.

bunnypenny · 23/09/2019 08:07

My mate flies long haul with just her and her twins (both under two) on a number of airlines. It is possible.

bunnypenny · 23/09/2019 08:08

Also if you’re buying a seat for your under two, you need to call the airline to do it.
