Quick! Flight advice - can I do this?

Has anyone ever landed at an airport, turned around and got back on the same flight back to the original destination?

DH was meant to collect us today from abroad. Flight back to the UK is tomorrow. M5 crash, he's going to miss his flight. Can he fly tomorrow, land and 'pick us up' while we get on the flight back? I have 2 under 2 so can't fly on my own. I worry he'll have to go through checks etc and there won't be time. But they might make special concessions for the situation (skip queues etc.) or it might be a bit like a transfer where you don't have to go through security again.

If the ticket was booked as a return, his return seat might be cancelled if he is a no show for the outbound.

MyOtherProfile · 23/09/2019 08:18

Definitely call the airline. Traveling alone with one tiny is difficult let alone two. I see all the people saying how many they know who dobit but I used to find it hard enough travelling with just one baby. Going to the loo, carrying hand luggage and the buggy etc are all really hard.

BarbaraofSeville · 23/09/2019 08:20

That won't be the case if it's a budget airline like Ryanair, Easyjet etc, Mayvis

However, if it is one of those airlines, with a 30 to 60 minute turn around, there probably won't be time to get from arrivals to departures, which are often separated and you simply can't get off and get on again.

Is there an earlier flight, either later today, or earlier tomorrow, to give him more time OP?

Or can you ask the airline about arrangements for travelling with two under twos, given that they probably won't allow both of them on your lap, which will be uncomfortable anyway.

The best solution would probably be to book airport assistance, and a comfort seat for one DC and get your DH to meet you at arrivals.

CAA rules state "~Children under 2 years of age must be seated either on an adult’s lap (with the supplementary loop) or properly secured in a car type safety seat provided by the passenger and acceptable to the airline, or an aircraft type safety seat specifically designed for infants provided by the airline". I'm guessing give the OP husband was flying out to help them home, she doesn't have an appropriate car seat with her. Probably the best chance is to see if the airline can supply one, if her husband can't make it.

BertieBotts · 23/09/2019 08:27

Usually if you have an under 2 in a seat of their own they need to be in a car seat.

If you do need to pick up a car seat at short notice, Joie Juva (infant seat) is flight approved and £30-40. For an older child Britax Eclipse (£70-80) is also flight approved, but you need a flight kit for it.

AJPTaylor · 23/09/2019 08:33

You might get better advice if you say which airport.

isurvived3under2 · 23/09/2019 11:40

You can not fly with baby twins on your own. Some airlines allow you to put infants in car seats but they can't be seated in the same row as you because of infant oxygen masks (there's only 1 per row). I don't think I could put one of the twins in a different row! I also have a 3 year old. It's too late to sort out an approved car seat and I wouldn't know how to carry it through security - I already have a double pram and 3 small children.

There's a 45 minute turnaround. The airport is Genoa in Italy. It's small.

I was going to call them but EasyJet found another flight to a close-ish airport for my husband to get on later today.

Those saying you can fly with 2 infants on your own... please check your facts first. The car seat workaround only works in certain scenarios.

It can also be incredibly challenging if you're not prepared. I don't have my twin harnesses on me as I was travelling with another adult. If my eldest needs the toilet on the flight, I'd have to lock 3 small children on the plane toilet. The list goes on... it's probably doable in an emergency but I'm trying to avoid that.

@bunnypenny how does she do it? Where do they sit?

OP posts:
isurvived3under2 · 23/09/2019 11:49

@PotteringAlong what you're suggesting is just not possible. You can't put an infant in an adult seat.

Which airline and airport is this? Airline staff here and passengers on my airline would need to leave plane and go through correct channels then back on plane again, only staff allowed to stay onboard during turnaround.

Greggers2017 · 23/09/2019 11:56

Yes you can fly with 2 under 2s. My SIL regularly did it with her twins, so there is no need to be so rude to people offering you advice. They did it with car seat like the above said.
You seem to be ignoring everybodies advice and just want the drama.

GeoffreyAndBungle · 23/09/2019 11:56

Sorry x- post i see you have said what airport it is!

isurvived3under2 · 23/09/2019 12:03

@Greggers2017 and did she sit a twin across the aisle from her? I don't mean to be rude but people suggesting one of the twins sits in DH's empty seat isn't very helpful!

OP posts:
isurvived3under2 · 23/09/2019 12:05

I definitely don't want any drama. I mentioned in my first reply that DH has found another flight today so my situation is sorted.

isurvived3under2 · 23/09/2019 12:07

@GeoffreyAndBungle yes, Genoa and EasyJet.

@BertieBotts thank you.

I think you would just go to the transit desk and ask for your boarding pass. Or they may print one for him when you check in for the original journey.

GrapefruitGin · 23/09/2019 12:10

I’m crew, I’ve seen it happen before. Dad flew son out, dropped him off then returned with us back to original destination however, he was lucky as it was a domestic flight. Airline won’t be able to guarantee he will get back on flight with you as it totally depends on the capacity of the airport.

GrapefruitGin · 23/09/2019 12:11

Just realised you’ve managed to sort it out OP, that’s good news

GeoffreyAndBungle · 23/09/2019 12:14

Glad you got it sorted!

isurvived3under2 · 23/09/2019 12:17

@GrapefruitGin it's all on his phone, boarding pass would be sorted... it's more security times that are the issue.

isurvived3under2 · 23/09/2019 12:18

Sorry that was for @Nanamilly!

OP posts:
bunnypenny · 23/09/2019 12:18

@isurvived3under2 plenty of aircraft have more than one infant mask in the same row, so that’s how she manages it. One baby on her lap, the other next to her in a car seat. Works well.

Glad you’ve found a solution!

isurvived3under2 · 23/09/2019 12:22

@bunnypenny ok, that might be for long haul or bigger planes. All short haul flights I've been on in the last 17 months have had the same rule. Glad to hear there are ways in some situations.
