Thomas Cook - looks like that's the end

Multiple sources reporting an announcement is imminent with the BBC reporting that planes are already being sent to various destinations to begin repatriation.

Sky News reports that TC have asked credit card companies to release £50m they are holding as a last ditch attempt.

I feel so sorry for TC staff losing their jobs.

For anyone who knows about this stuff - apparently TC had to prove they were financially solvent to get their ATOL cerification renewed by the CAA (it's up for renewal in September). Does this mean that TC would have been well aware of the issues for quite a while but left it until they really had to to try and secure lending deals?

I think it's such a shame.

I think the people at the top knew for a while that it was a lost cause, but they still had to keep selling holidays.

Feel sad for the staff tonight watching all the tcx flights returning to the UK on flight radar, knowing that might be the last flight for them on Thomas Cook.

End of an era definitely.

Just seen this online

Thomas Cook - looks like that's the end
PanamaPattie · 22/09/2019 23:57

I don't understand why people were still going on holiday in the last few days, when they knew TC is going bust. Why risk being stuck somewhere and waiting to be rescued?

HairyFloppins · 23/09/2019 00:04

Panama from reading Facebook a lot of it has been head in the sand type thing. Until they see it in black and white from Thomas Cook a lot of them are convinced they can be saved and it's all scaremongering in the press. But it's not this time unfortunately.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but I have been watching this all unfold for a while now and there is no way I would have booked with Thomas Cook in the past year.

Mooncupblues · 23/09/2019 00:10

Exactly even until today people have been saying it’s press scaremongering to an extent

TeaLibrary · 23/09/2019 00:14

Sad for their staff and reps / cabin crew who are likely to be stranded abroad along with all of the people on holiday

KenAdams · 23/09/2019 00:21

I've seen posts on here from people claiming their family members work for TC and it's all just scaremongering by the media and they've sold as many holidays this weekend as the same time last year. If this is the sort of thing they're telling their customers some might be inclined to believe them.

Well they're gone now.

lostonadustyrock · 23/09/2019 03:58

Gone now and anybody due to return after 6th October needs to make own arrangements.

Very sad. I can’t understnad how even yesterday people were still boarding flights saying ‘we’ll get home somehow, we just want to get there’...fine if TC flights only and willing to sort selves out, but a bit short sighted if going on a package holiday.

Apparently one hotel in Tunisia refused to let guests leave as TC had not yet paid them, and demand £1600 from guests. Sorted by a rep who knew that in a matter of hours he’d be jobless.

JemimaTab · 23/09/2019 04:04

I think that people may have insisted on travelling because they’d paid for the holiday and didn’t want to lose out. It may not have occurred to them that TC may not have passed their payment on to the hotels.

It doesn't work like that. Hotels are paid 60 or 90 days after the holiday, depending on the terms and conditions. They don't get paid in advance. I imagine the hotel in that case was worried it wouldn't get paid if TC went bust.

On Friday TC was still saying that if customers cancelled their holiday because they were worried, they wouldn't get a refund. Which is why people flew off on Saturday.

Patroclus · 23/09/2019 06:41

Usual morons going on about those bloody experts with their scaremongering and fancy book learnin

KenAdams · 23/09/2019 07:17

Oh I didn't realise they were saying that on Friday Emma - irresponsible but I suppose they knew repatriation wouldn't be their problem.
