Help...at my wits end!

I am 24 weeks pregnant. When I was 16 weeks (so over 2 months ago!) I caught some awful bug which started with a terrible sore throat, fever, chills, and messed up my sinuses. I had mucus coming out my nose and coughing up mucus for almost 7 weeks!

I finally thought I was over it, until a week ago when something triggered again and back to terrible mucus cough and having to bring up pleghm constantly.

Again, finally yesterday I was over most of it and almost feeling like myself again, but today I got caught outside when some torrential rain happened and now I'm back to horrendous mucus in my nose and throat. I just don't know what to do! I'm pregnant so I can't take anything?

Does anyone know what this could be? I hate my life right now! Feeling sorry for myself Sad

Sorry no idea but speak to your GP. Hope you feel better soon & congratulations

pinkstar01 · 22/09/2019 23:13

@buckeejit thank you, I did see my GP about a month ago when it still hadn't gone away the first time and she said it was most likely something viral and I have to wait it out...
I think I'll call again in the morning but I really don't think she'll say anything different :(

I ordered some Manuka honey tonight in desperation though, don't know what else to do

You can take paracetamol in normal dosage to ease the symptoms of cold. It's considered safe during pregnancy.

Also, a standard OTC nose spray to help you breathe freely is also fine.

@wattytanker yes I've been taking paracetamol occasionally for backaches but my throat issue isn't painful, it's just really uncomfortable having to cough and bring up mucus every 5-10 minutes...
Unfortunately paracetamol can't fix that :(

Sick of herbals teas as well, they don't help either

This happened to me - not pregnant though. Absolutely nothing shifted it not even antibiotics. Turned out I had developed adult onset asthma and in the end had to take a dose of steroids and now have inhalers but rarely have to use them except when I catch a cold or flu.

pinkstar01 · 23/09/2019 09:38

@CarolDanvers I considered asthma as both my mum and sister take inhalers for it, although I've never had it but I have too much mucus for it to be that...and despite being massively uncomfortable my breathing seems okay

I'm not sure you know. I had tons of mucus too. Rattling in my chest at night when I lay down, waking me up a few hours after I fell asleep but it was still asthma. I'd mention it to the GP and maybe see if an inhaler would work just to open up the lungs and at least get you to cough everything up.

As lovely as that sounds Grin

@pinkstar01 have you tried making your own honey and lemon drink? The lemon juice will help to break down the mucus and the honey will soothe your throat and help prevent the coughing. You can vary the quantities of honey and lemon juice to taste! I use the juice of one lemon in a pint glass, with 2 tsp honey and just boiled water, obviously allowed to cool!
