Neonatal abstinence syndrome - Trigger warning

I was on social media this week watching some videos and a video auto-played about NAS. The video was made in the US and was basically saying that the numbers of babies born with NAS is on the increase. It’s where the mother takes drugs during her pregnancy (not always abusively, some mothers are actively trying to kick the habit by taking prescribed drugs such as methodone).

Many people volunteer to care for the babies at the hospital (cuddles, feeding etc.) as they need around the clock care. The video broke my heart and I haven’t really been able to stop thinking about it.

I’m not sure how much of a problem this is in the UK but is there a need for volunteers in the London area as I’m keen to help? I have some spare time as I’ve reduced my hours in work and feel really compelled to help (if such a requirement exists).

Thanks!

I work in a large neonatal unit (not london) and sadly I've seen an increase in these babies, probably average 1 a month. it's heartbreaking to watch them.
They need cuddles and swaddling and rocking. We have volunteers who sometimes do bottle feeds and cuddles so i would defo ask at your local hospital.
You will need a DBS check and induction.
ThankyouFlowers

Thanks @Nemoislost I assumed if the problem was getting worse in the US the same could likely be said for the UK (but maybe a lesser extent).

I am pleased to hear there are volunteers and am very keen to do this. I have an up to date DBS check as I volunteer elsewhere with vulnerable children. I’ll enquire tomorrow if any local hospitals need volunteers as I’d really love to help.
