I have to admit to hating geography at school having no interest in faraway places :(

I wish there had been Google Earth back in my days at school, it must make learning geography so much more interesting, well getting to my point, I love to spend hours looking at different places on GE. Today I am looking at the Panama canal, just zooming in and out and seeing why it made such a difference to shipping.

If you like this pastime too, give me some of your favourite places to look at please, it's a wet afternoon, I'm sick, bored and sitting with my laptop on my knee :)

You should try geo guesser though my son just told me it's no longer free to play. Basically it dropped you in a random location and you have to figure out where you are.

NoLeopard · 22/09/2019 13:51

Yes I love the Panama Canal. You can see that it goes north to south and not east to west as everyone thinks! My favourite zooms are disused amusement parks. I can't link at the moment but River Country in Orlando is quite spooky

I was was looking at Manhattan around Madison Avenue the other day after watching mad men again. I was working out were they all live. I like to do street view too.

SleepwalkingThroughLife · 22/09/2019 14:09

If you like that sort of thing you may be interested in looking at the Strava heatmap and finding those places on Google maps.

Not my main hobby, oh no.

SleepwalkingThroughLife · 22/09/2019 14:13

Have you watched Lion ultimate Google map search!

Evilmorty · 22/09/2019 14:24

I love doing this but I have to admit to having a bit of a mild panic when it starts to zoom in, and when you have picked somewhere very remote, about what you are likely to see. I get very unnerved about seeing the people walking around with their faces obscured.

So yeah, I get you, but i only do it when j am mentally prepared to see something that might make me jump! Grin

Gosh so glad I'm not the only one, I'm loving my quiet afternoon of stealth travel.

SleepwalkingThroughLife the Strava heat maps are amazing, look at Europe compared to even the US.

Dubai is pretty cool on google earth, the man made Palm Island.

I loved looking up places I used to live or stay in during my backpacking days. So nostalgic!

PandaPaws99 · 22/09/2019 15:08

Davis-Monthan Air Force Base Aircraft Boneyard

My mum had a penfriend in New Orleans for 80 years until the friend died. I showed my mum her house on Streetview and she kept saying things like, oh that's the neighbour Mary's house and that must be where the little spaniel lives etc. Mum felt really close to her, it was lovely.

Grimbles · 22/09/2019 19:22

I like zooming in on tiny islands in the middle of the ocean. Places like Nauru and Kiribati Shock
