Online art class for dc

DC (8 and 10) interested in art and self initiate lots of projects but the older one is really keen to learn some techniques and have more structure. They've gotten books from the library but all seemed aimed at younger kids or adults. The classes around us are more craft based - macaroni art and the like, where we were looking for something more focused no "fine" arts, drawing and painting.

Was wondering if anyone had any experience of an online course or even ideas for some good books.

Bob Ross videos on YouTube might be good.

I think bob ross's videos teach more tricks and in the end you only learn how to copy his style. I'd like something more traditional and open - like going to a real art class i suppose

Any other ideas? (Shameless bump)

We are in the exact same situation.

It is hard to find "proper" drawing lessons for slightly older children. You get a lot of junk-modeling/paint-splashing/babysitting-the-kids-while-they-draw type workshops, but there is little in the way of lessons that will actually teach them.

I'm about to sign my child up for some private online lessons from an art tutor. I won't share the studio name as that may be breaking MN rules (PM me if you like, though), but the key is to do a Google search for "observational drawing" lessons for children. You could also try looking on Tutorful and Tutorhunt, again searching for "observational art" or "observational drawing."
