How to manage somebody you can’t stand?

I received a promotion last year and manage a team of 12. It caused a little controversy at the time but I’ve dealt with it well, I get on with everybody but ultimately they mostly get on with the work & although we are much more hands on than previous managers most people are self sufficient which is great as I can’t stand micro management!
There is one member of the team, let’s call him Fred. Now Fred is getting on my nerves and it’s getting progressively worse, he is two faced, outrageously needy, whingey, negative and just becoming a real soul sucker. I feel like the role isn’t worth the hassle because of him! If I was just one of the team I would completely bloody ignore him but I can’t.
He is like a rollercoaster, his mood changes daily. How can you manage somebody you can’t stand? I really, really try to be polite and relate to him but I seriously want to tell him to F off!
I need to stay professional Grin help!

How long has he been there? Can you get rid?

Is his attitude bad enough that you'd be justified in sitting him down and having a word about it? What do the others on the team think of him?

To be clear - I don't mean as in 'Hey, Fred, nobody likes you'. But if you're all having to deal with constant negativity and are walking on eggshells around him, I think a, quiet word about being more of a team player might be a starting point.
