Fear of choking

I used to be a member before but then I accidentally deleted my account. So I've made a new account

Since partner was a child he has had a fear of people choking and a fear of himself choking.

Now he will only eat soft foods. He hates going out to eat and Hates going to family members houses.

I'm worried that son will pick up on this and only eat soft foods aswell if he sees his dad doing that.

What should I do?

Is your partner willing to get help for this?

I have a fear of choking too so I sympathise with him, it’s awful, but I did CBT and it did help. Not massively, I still can’t/won’t eat meat, I drink a lot with my meals but it didn’t get as bad as only eating soft foods, so luckily hasn’t been passed onto my children (they don’t know about it)

He is willing to get help but he said nothing would work

He needs to at least try.

When you say soft foods, what do you mean?

Will he eat pasta? Lasagne? Soft things with plenty of sauce etc.

He will eat yogurt, sometimes banana, soup (with no veg or anything in it), sometimes mash potato, sometimes porridge and sometimes he will eat pasta.

I’ve had this and it’s awful. The only thing that really helped me was SSRIs. I can now eat pretty much what I want without even thinking about it.

My 8 year old has suddenly stopped eating solids will only eat soup, yoghurt and ice cream, he was distraught so was taken to A&E dr found nothing wrong. He looks terrified when it comes to meal times and I am sure he is scared of choking. It all started a few weeks ago starting eating less drinking loads with a meal and now the last few days solids have stopped I am distraught. My OH got so angry with him yesterday. I know that’s not going to work. Pleas help

@Ljmac154 ,oops, that wasn't very helpful of me. To start a new thread, go to General Health and look down in the bottom right hand corner to where it says New - same place where you click Reply once the thread is open.
Hope this helps.

anginophobia Is treatable. Hypnotherapy (private) be beneficial and might get quicker results than waiting for NHS counselling.

It’s not a silly fad it’s a phobia that may endanger his health if he doesn’t get enough nutrients and his child may want to copy.

I hope he understands that it’s a serious health issue and his life will be so much better if he can get help to overcome it.
