Mini stools / pouffes / floor cushions etc

Having (overseas) family staying with me for a week- and we will be x3 seats short in the living room! (well, x2 as I’m happy to sit on the floor and I have a large floor cushion).

So what to do?

  1. bring manky garden chairs in (ugh)

  2. do nothing and have family sit on tile floor (no), or

  3. purchase x2 sitting on items ✔️

Any suggestions as to what to buy?

Pouffes look so 1970s (and not in a good way) and naice small upholstered stools seem to be giving my sofas a close run for their money in terms of price

When not in use for this week, I would put them away and bring them out for the rare occasions I have more people than will fit on sofa seats

Do you have a dressing table or desk in the house? If so can you use those chairs if not could you use these things and buy for them with family in mind?
Dining table chairs?

Pouffes are small, and low to the ground to be honest so are the little stools and I can't see it making for comfortable sitting unless children are involved.

You could get a cheap futon for about £100 if you've a spare room to keep it
I would potentionally not bring in manky chairs but have a think about buying stackable extra chairs for the dining table or nice summer chairs for the garden you can use (assuming you've got the storage!)

Fold up plastic chair from Ikea. We've got 4 that we keep in the shed and bring out when having lots of people round. Don't take up space and pop a cushion on the seat and they're not particularly uncomfortable! Think they're about a fiver each from what I remember

No dressing table chairs, no dining room, no spare room for futon ☹️

If anyone has back issues (like me) they would die on a floor cushion! I would either bring in the garden chairs and buy some cheap cushions to pad them out or buy some cheap fold up chairs from Argos.

Aridane · 18/09/2019 07:25

Ah, fold up chairs - why didn’t I think of that!

Thank you for the advice on pouffes and low stools - was thinking of visuals rather than comfort Blush

IKEA TERJE are nice and only £13. Every home should have a couple. Or there is a £19 version in John Lewis if easier to get to...

Biancadelrioisback · 18/09/2019 07:30

Do you have a sturdy coffee table? We throw a cushion on ours and it becomes a mini bench seat.

ChilliMayo · 18/09/2019 07:35

Buy a couple of folding camping chairs, the type that fold into to their own cases with a shoulder strap. They take up so little space and are so much more Comfortable than hard 'dining type'. So many future uses - picnics, watching sports event etc.

Aridane · 18/09/2019 07:35

Ooh - what about these ones from Habitat ? Fun colour and £12 each and with 25% off today AND a £10 Argos voucher (!!)

There are some attractive stool I was looking at with the same height and seat dimensions of the Argos / Habitat etc chairs - see link and image . Gorgeous looking - but look at the price! And they wouldn't fold away and go int e garage. But they do look so nice

People sitting for long period of times need their backs supported. A stool would be uncomfortable after a few minutes for most people.

Soola · 18/09/2019 08:20

As the hostess you should be pulling out all the stops to make your guests as comfortable as possible. If you are on a limited budget you can buy secondhand chairs cheaply.

MissKittyCat · 18/09/2019 08:42

I agree with PP about folding camping chairs. They are surprisingly comfortable. You may be able to borrow some as lots of people have them. Or shops may have them on sale at this time of year.

Aridane · 18/09/2019 09:50

I live by a Decathlon and will try out a camping chair

www.decathlon.co.uk/Buy/Camping+chairs

If they don't feel that amazing, I will go with the Habitat folding chairs as they are prettier and they are 25% off and I get an Argos voucher

The camping chairs aren't very pretty but I guess comfort comes of family trumps aesthetics!! Wink

Soola · 18/09/2019 13:36
