Who else despises autumn and winter?

It's getting dark earlier and earlier, I've got the heating on due to being cold and everyone is already down with the lurgey. Hate it. The constant juggling of sick kids and work. Dragging everyone out for school when we all just want a pj day. Poor light levels and depression. DS2's autism will soon be massively exacerbated by being unable to get out and burn his energy off (he's also asthmatic and cold/wet triggers it). After the washout summer it's going to be a very long haul to spring. I think a decent spell of good weather would make it bearable but I can literally count on my fingers the number of hot days this year, out of 365 days it's a bit of a let down really. And the rain! Almost constant, varying only from drizzle to torrential, though admittedly that's let up a bit now. So looking forward to the back end of winter already.

From November until April (this year May) I have to wear ice cleats on my snow boots and don't have anything exposed on my face apart from my eyes and cheeks. But sometimes I actually wear a face mask.

Where do you live?

What kind of face mask? Like a bank robber?

TitchyP · 26/09/2019 23:17

I hate winter as I'm permanently cold and need the heating at about 32 degrees to feel human.
I'm a miserable cow between October and April.

Soola · 26/09/2019 23:25

The cold isn’t so much a problem as when it’s combines with rain.

I hate rain. Cannot stand getting wet although I have wet weather gear for my hiking and dog walks.

Starlight2004 · 26/09/2019 23:30

Yes I hate it! I long for a life where I can wear flip flops and kaftans all year round and never have to worry about whether or not we need to take coats when we go anywhere! When I retire it will be somewhere warmer!

morrisseysquif · 27/09/2019 14:37

I don't mind most weather as long as I'm dressed for it. I hate being cold, particularly my feet and hands. Grey days can get me down though. I do enjoy and good long walk but if its a grey day...it is hard to uplift me. I will look into those sun lamps.

I wish Christmas was at the end of January and fairly lights were left on into January, the months that need that twinkling cheer!

This year I'm investing in more candles and hygge and a vacuum to suck out the fire ashes!

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 27/09/2019 14:43

I want to know where tvdinner lives too. I live in Canada and it's not that bad. it is due to snow tonight though

ItIsWhatItIsInnit · 27/09/2019 15:47

Yep. I'm sick of going to other people's houses where they don't put the heating on, and I have to sit there wearing a throw and fluffy socks while they say "are you cold??". My house is heated to a good 27 degrees in winter. My last job had constantly broken heating and it was genuinely one of my main reasons for leaving - couldn't work, hands too cold, had to sit in a meeting room with a heater and isolate myself.

Christmas is wank too. Having to spend £300 on presents for about 15 people, 80% of which will go to straight to charity or landfill. Getting loads of tat that I will give to charity and having to pretend I like it. I think this year I will insist on "experiences only" as presents....

Dark after work so no nice walks in the nature reserve/down the posh road in town to ogle at the people who have 2 Teslas on their drive.

ItIsWhatItIsInnit · 27/09/2019 15:57

Also, everyone seems to wear nothing but black, grey, navy and khaki - and if you're lucky, maroon. With a grey sky and torrential rain.

userxx · 27/09/2019 16:04

@ItIsWhatItIsInnit I've found my kindred spirit.

Dowser · 27/09/2019 16:53

Well if today is anything to go by I’m in for a rough ride
After driving half an hour through leafy lanes to get to a botanical garden
We sat in the car in torrential rain and it wasn’t letting up
What a waste of petrol, my energy, I’m shattered
Argh!

LoonyLunaLoo · 27/09/2019 17:40

I could feel myself going down hill from the beginning of August due to very rainy, miserable weather up here and DH commented a few times that I was being grumpy. I’m taking control this year as have starting taking a high does of vitamin D, Berocca style vitamin (but ASDA’s own) and a zinc and magnesium tablet (although the zinc is for my spots 🙈). That’s in addition to St John’s Wort. I honestly feel a million dollars! I even feel warmer, I think due to the increased energy levels 🥰.

DoYouTakeSelfEsteem · 27/09/2019 17:57

Love winter, despise summer.

Love the dark nights and the cold. DD actually starts getting up a reasonable hour because she knows dark = nighttime.
The cold means I can actually breathe crisp air, instead of trying to breathe the horrible, humid, thick air of summer.

I love the smell of bonfires and fireworks, going to Christmas fairs, eating roasted chestnuts and drinking proper mulled wine (not the shit cheap stuff you can buy in bottles.)

I love being able to get dressed in actual, proper clothing. Boots, coats, scarves, socks, jeans, jumpers. You can layer if you're too cold and find your perfect temperature.
Getting dressed in the heat is a nightmare. Wearing shorts and a T-shirt is pretty much the least amount of clothing you can get away with, no matter what I do I cannot get my body to a comfortable temperature.

Talking about being cool, sleep! Wearing warm pyjamas, getting under the big duvet (with heated blanket) and nodding off instead of having to wear next to nothing, opening all the windows, having no covers and still being too bloody hot.

Comfort foods, warm drinks, winter decor, Christmas decorations.

Getting home from the nursery run to the heating on and having a warm drink.
I don't even mind the rain. Rain in summer, to me, has a horrible dirty smell and turns the air humid as fuck. Winter rain is cold and crisp.

My absolute favourite thing is coming in from the bitter cold and getting warm again.
There's not one thing about autumn and winter I dislike and I suffer with rheumatoid arthritis plus other pain conditions.

RIBlue · 27/09/2019 17:59

I like all seasons for their respective attributes and love seeing the change from one to the next too. That said, I could happily cancel February. Lots of people hate January but I don’t mind it at all, you’ve just had Christmas, new year is fun, start of a new year etc etc. By February though I’ve generally had enough of getting muddy doing animals and run out of space to hang up wet coats. Pay day comes round quick though!

Delatron · 27/09/2019 18:37

Surely we all hate the heating bills of winter? Even those who dislike summer. You talk about coming in from the cold and getting cosy and warm but what if it’s a struggle to heat the house...

ItIsWhatItIsInnit · 27/09/2019 19:45

I have a double-glazed 1 bed flat so it heats pretty quickly. The bills don't seem that different from summer TBH!

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 27/09/2019 20:12

Love it until about mid November then hate it til March.

Topseyt · 27/09/2019 21:03

I utterly loathe it. Especially after the end of October when clocks go back. Then I just want to hibernate until around the end of next February.

Horrible time of year. An Indian summer helps, but it can't be guaranteed Christmas is shite. OK for the one day, but I hate to run up, and then we must suffer January and February.

moonrisecrap · 27/09/2019 21:05

No! I love autumn. It’s such a lovely time and I love being all cozy but obviously I understand it must be difficult for you, hang in there!

userxx · 27/09/2019 21:13

What does being all cozy actually mean anyway? Heating on full blast, covered in throws and wearing bed socks. Just WTF does it mean.

DrCoconut · 02/10/2019 20:05

Re layering clothes. That's one of the worst aspects. I don't want to be swathed in layers, I want light clothes, ease of movement and my skin being able to breathe. Layers are sweaty and horrid, even in the cold. I honestly feel claustrophobic in lots of clothes and I also hate the feeling of being chilled right through and unable to warm up properly. The heating tends to make me prone to headaches too, it makes me dehydrated whereas natural warmth doesn't. In summer I'm mostly at my ideal temperature and if it gets a bit warm we have a fan. The weather has been awful the last week or so and it's dark early now too. The kids are finding it harder to get up for school too, it's always a battle in autumn/winter.

midsomermurderess · 02/10/2019 20:12

I can understand not liking the weather but 'despise' is an odd term to use about weather. I quite like this time of year, especially on golden crisp days like today. I like the heartier food and cosying up with the curtains closed, looking forward to eg Spiral coming back onTV. There's a time when I get tired of the short days and cold and look forward to spring. I guess I enjoy the cycle.

Roominmyhouse · 02/10/2019 20:26

I hate it. I feel the cold so much prefer spring and summer when it feels like there is heat in the sun. I love wearing flip flops and going out without a coat. I’m with all the previous posters who could quite happily naff off elsewhere for autumn and winter!

fruitinaheapisnotabirthdaycake · 13/10/2019 14:07

I like autumn but I hate the 'heavy' autumn air that make it hard to breathe clearly. It's hard to describe and I don't have asthma but to me the air always feels heavier in autumn and I have to draw my breath more.

shegoeshere · 13/10/2019 15:34

Sorry I prefer autumn and winter to summer... don't like heat!
