Who else despises autumn and winter?

It's getting dark earlier and earlier, I've got the heating on due to being cold and everyone is already down with the lurgey. Hate it. The constant juggling of sick kids and work. Dragging everyone out for school when we all just want a pj day. Poor light levels and depression. DS2's autism will soon be massively exacerbated by being unable to get out and burn his energy off (he's also asthmatic and cold/wet triggers it). After the washout summer it's going to be a very long haul to spring. I think a decent spell of good weather would make it bearable but I can literally count on my fingers the number of hot days this year, out of 365 days it's a bit of a let down really. And the rain! Almost constant, varying only from drizzle to torrential, though admittedly that's let up a bit now. So looking forward to the back end of winter already.

@VetOnCall Fuck loads of gin in the hot chocolate might make it more bearable....... I'll give it a try and report back 🍸

zeezee3 · 19/09/2019 00:02

I LOVED that crazy hot weather in July. And last year's summer was amazing!

Much better than the drab, dark, dank horrid winter.

No wonder senior citizens move abroad to a hot country when they retire!

sweetkitty · 19/09/2019 00:05

Me! Hate it with a passion. I have Fibromyalgia, Raynauds and SAD so it’s just one big miserable cold mess for me. Christmas is OK but the build up starts in flaming September these days. January and February are rubbish depressing months.

I’m in Scotland so we are lucky if we get a week of mid 20s in the Summer anyway. The long dark nights are rubbish too. I love coming home after work and being able to go out on the garden and it’s still light to gone 10.

LemonPrism · 19/09/2019 00:12

I am really basic when it comes to seasons. I LOVE the beginning of summer and heatwaves and then I love autumn and then Christmas. Jan-March can fucking die and then I love spring.

It all has its time and place, except jan-March. Which I repeat can die.

DrCoconut · 19/09/2019 00:36

Unshriven, last winter my DS's filled the small inflatable paddling pool and left it for a few days. They ended up with a disc of ice nearly 4cm thick that they could literally roll round the yard. I scraped ice off the car for the school run on many days. So we definitely had proper cold here. It's well into single figures some nights now, hence needing the heating on.

I do remember the one day in July it was 34 and yes that was too hot. But I can cope with and love anything up to about 30. Especially love sitting outside and eating on a warm evening.

userxx · 19/09/2019 08:20

Yep, it was about 6 here last night. I've also noticed that gas prices seem to have gone up again 🙈.

Roll on spring 2020.

mydogisthebest · 19/09/2019 08:29

@PickAChew, where I live there were 2 days at the end of July that were very hot. I remember because it was the first and second day of the school holidays and the children next door spent from 9am to 9pm screaming more or less non stop in the paddling pool in their garden. I was dreading the 6 weeks but no other days were good enough for them to be out there.

It was too hot for me but I still would rather too hot that grey and miserable. We have had so much rain and grey this summer that I am dreading winter more than ever

1wokeuplikethis · 19/09/2019 09:07

zeezee3 if you’d mustered the energy to continue reading my post you’d have seen I was being lighthearted but it’s ok, I know you’re very upset about upcoming The Winter, so I won’t hold it against you.

Jackiesathome · 19/09/2019 09:13

Is seasonal depression a thing? I know many people who get down in January time and its just down to the season.

Any thoughts of why and how to help such thing?

lololove · 19/09/2019 09:29

@DrCoconut I live in Lincolnshire too and it's been a hot summer! It might not have been blazing blue skies daily but its been hot and humid for most of the time since May ish. Yes there's been rain and some pretty horrendous stuff around the dam bit I really wouldn't day washout summer.

I think I have reverse SAD. I have an autoimmune issue which means I'm roasting even when it's winter but I genuinely hate summer and I'm not a massive fan of spring. From the hot weather, my body over reacting to every bit of heat, the summer holidays where its impossible to get anything done, the influx of tourists, hot uncomfortable nights, people getting loud and angry because they're hot, the dog thinking it's morning at 4/5am because it's light outside etc etc.)

Don't get me wrong, I don't like Halloween and hate bonfire night (and the build up with kids outside shops with a football with a piece of paper with a face drawn into it sellotaped round it) but other than that? All for it!

DrCoconut · 19/09/2019 10:11

Interesting that perception has a lot to do with it. I have only found a handful of days to be what I'd call hot. 15 or less has me reaching for a cardigan or jacket whereas it seems a lot of people on here consider 15 to be tropical. We're at the top of Lincolnshire and most of July's events that we were due to go to were cancelled due to the rain or conditions following heavy rain. School sports day, family fun day at work etc.

Not saying anyone is right or wrong btw, we're all different

I really wouldn’t describe this year as a ‘hot summer’ July was nice but August wasn’t for the whole (I’m in SE).
It was average with lots of rain and rubbish weather mid August.
June was rubbish too. I have a screenshot of the weather and it was about 16 and rainy for lots of it.

mydogisthebest · 19/09/2019 13:16

I live on the Lincolnshire/Nottinghamshire borders and I think this summer has been awful.

June was cold and wet. July was a little bit better and we had 2 very hot days at the end but too hot really for most people. First week of August was sunny but the rest was not very warm and, again, a lot of rain.

shinynewapple · 19/09/2019 13:43

Yes - whether we had a 'good' summer or not is about both geography and perception.

I like temperatures between 18-23 (may be up to 25 if I'm on holiday) so for me we had a good Summer. A couple of ridiculously hot days and a few stretches of rain, but nothing that stopped me getting out between the showers, except may be one or two days. I live West Midlands and was lucky enough to be holidaying in parts of the country which had lovely weather at the time.

I really can't deal with slippy underfoot though (ice/snow)

Popili · 20/09/2019 06:35

You've got the heating on?! We still have the back foot open from the minute we get up until at least 8 in the evening! What are you going to do when it actually gets cold?!
As others have said lots of different t weather around the UK, I've had a day of +80kph earlier on in the week and temperatures of around 8c, doubt you would want your back door open in that!

I find winter soul crushing. I live about as far north as you can go and the darkness is depressing in winter, I have a sad light, vitamin d and saving up to buy some kind of exercise machine, possibly a treadmill so I can exercise inside. But I still find it urgh, I don't mind on the days it snows as it always feels a little bit lighter because of the white but for the most of winter it's just lots of rain, wind and darkness.

tvdinnertracks · 26/09/2019 16:00

I fucking despise winter. I'm so depressed by the thought of it. I've been in tears several time the last few weeks realising summer is over. I have to go away somewhere warm this winter for a week at least or I honestly don't think I'll get through it sane. SadSadSad

Nimello · 26/09/2019 16:03

ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME!! All those who say "I love dark evenings and scrunching through leaves and pumpkins" can FUCK OFF. It's miserable, dark and horrible, and I have SAD so it feels like the entire world is ending as the light goes. Hate it, hate it, hate it. My ideal job would be one where I flew to the other side of the world in the time the clocks are not at British summer time and never had to endure the awfulness again

Verticality says it for me.

Arrowfanatic · 26/09/2019 17:01

January can do one because it lasts for like 86 days but otherwise i quite like it.

I'm happiest in jeans, hoodies & boots. I like that it gets dark early and that the school run doesnt leave me in a sweaty mess & karate is much more comfortable without the humidity.

My birthday is the end of november and i really enjoy organising xmas. I love hot drinks on cold days and not feeling guilty for curling up on the sofa all day. Although i do enjoy a beer garden in summer.

I'm starting work in a couple of weeks after a decade out of it so it'll be interesting to see if my opinions change once I'm in an office all day & coming home in the dark. That said, i quite like driving home in the dark 💁‍♀️

Confuseddotcotton · 26/09/2019 17:12

I feel much more comfortable in colder weather. I am very fair skinned so burn really easily, plus I have very thick hair, so my head gets really sweaty and horrible in the heat. I much prefer winter type clothes, and I don’t mind getting up and getting home in the dark.

But, I can’t be doing with all the OTT descriptions of crisp, autumnal walks through crunchy leaves, snuggling on the sofa with a hot choc, cosying up with a blanket with fairy lights and candles..

in reality, most of the autumn and winter is damp, windy, rainy. I go for walks just as much as in summer due to needing to walk the dog, and the number of crisp, autumn days with crunchy leaves is very few and far between!

My evenings are about the same as in summer, get home from work, cook dinner, do some chores and watch a bit of telly. If I need a blanket then my house is too cold and I will put the heating on.

tvdinnertracks · 26/09/2019 18:33

From November until April (this year May) I have to wear ice cleats on my snow boots and don't have anything exposed on my face apart from my eyes and cheeks. But sometimes I actually wear a face mask.

I get stuck in my house for days on end.

It's utterly depressing and if I have 6 months of below freezing this year I don't know what I'll do.

tvdinnertracks · 26/09/2019 18:34

The UK feels like a balmy holiday spot and we are pretty much without coats and baking even in December.

bluebeck · 26/09/2019 19:07

I totally fucking hate it.

Have been cheering myself up by booking holidays Grin

Baguetteaboutit · 26/09/2019 19:52

The WHOLE of the UK tvdinner?
