Who else despises autumn and winter?

It's getting dark earlier and earlier, I've got the heating on due to being cold and everyone is already down with the lurgey. Hate it. The constant juggling of sick kids and work. Dragging everyone out for school when we all just want a pj day. Poor light levels and depression. DS2's autism will soon be massively exacerbated by being unable to get out and burn his energy off (he's also asthmatic and cold/wet triggers it). After the washout summer it's going to be a very long haul to spring. I think a decent spell of good weather would make it bearable but I can literally count on my fingers the number of hot days this year, out of 365 days it's a bit of a let down really. And the rain! Almost constant, varying only from drizzle to torrential, though admittedly that's let up a bit now. So looking forward to the back end of winter already.

I hate it, especially the dark mornings and evenings. I don’t feel cosy I just feel cold. Halloween is a pile of shit and I have no idea why people look forward to one evening and say it makes a whole season.

I am trying to be more positive this year but I can already feel my energy sapping and I’m coming down with a cold.

Anyway, I have a light alarm SAD lamp thing to help with dark mornings. I’m really enjoying his final blast of September sunshine we’re having and making the most of being out in the sunshine.

I just look at the lists people make about how much they love autumn and winter and think WTF?
Cosy? No I want to be outside in my shorts
Snuggling under a blanket. Bleurgh see above.
Can’t remember what else. Fireworks night? Yes brilliant with a dog. Crap night.

Plus how can anyone love their heating bills?!

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 17/09/2019 18:57

Autumn is ok - it's my birthday, and I quite like Halloween and Bonfire Night. Love Christmas.

After that though, it's a full-on descent into utter misery for me, for however long it takes to warm up again

mydogisthebest · 17/09/2019 19:04

Not that keen on autumn but hate winter. It's not the cold I dislike but the dark morning, the dark evenings, the dark afternoons. So depressing and not "cosy". I hate it when people talk about winter being "cosy".

I hate winter clothes. Can't stand having to wear socks, hate any long sleeved tops but jumpers are awful. Not keen on winter jackets or coats and really dislike scarves and gloves (don't really bother wearing either because I dislike them so much).

EdWinchester · 17/09/2019 19:10

I like all the seasons

And winter is cosy - woodburner blazing, candles lit, lovely cold walks with the dog to a pub and Christmas followed by snow (hopefully).

Stepstepmother · 17/09/2019 19:10

@Rubicon80 I’m not sure you can blame what appears to be your fairly serious food issues on Autumn and Winter Hmm

EssentialHummus · 17/09/2019 19:13

I’m happy-ish up to about January (xmas, hannukah, good food, community stuff on the go) - then miserable until March. And the illnesses with toddler dd can get to fuck.

cluecu · 17/09/2019 19:16

I am grateful for the fact that I don't suffer from SAD as that must be really tough. I think every season has its plus points and I do love autumn and winter, though don't particularly care for Halloween and spiders terrify me!

Treaclebee · 17/09/2019 19:22

I like the 6 months of BST and dislike the 6 months of GMT.

As another poster said I could delete November and January completely.

Had a friend who moved from LA to UK two years ago, and loves having cold seasons and says constant warm/sun/light isn't good for people Hmm. I said I think he should live 30 odd years here and then see how he feels (and in the meantime gift me his citizenship so I can go live over there) Grin

hotcrossbun4321 · 17/09/2019 19:23

Hate it. The feeling of the year being over is depressing, then the feeling of having a whole year stretching ahead of you in Jan is no good for an anxiety sufferer. I hate the lack of light and blue sky, coming home to a dark house, having to spend ages getting bundled up before going out then boiling on the train to work. Trees losing their leaves, worry about my elderly family and neighbours in the ice. I've got a couple of weeks booked in the Southern Hemisphere to look forward to, and plan to get as much vitamin D as possible. The only thing I like is the stodgy food as I'm greedy.

Baguetteaboutit · 17/09/2019 19:23

Autumn is fine but winter is miserable and endless, fuck winter.

pictish · 17/09/2019 19:24

January, February, March can do one. They just go on foreverrrrrrrrr.

Newearringsplease · 17/09/2019 19:31

I detest the summer with every cell in my body. Sweat pouring down my back and struggling to sleep. I love cold frost mornings makes me feel alive

DrCoconut · 17/09/2019 19:35

Live in Lincolnshire. The floods due to all the rain were on TV. The summer holidays had literally a handful of nice beach days, the rest were at best don't need a cardigan days. After I started this the weather picked up a bit but the temperatures are mostly falling and it's getting darker in the evenings. The weather app is showing 12 today. I don't like socks and coats just make me look like a bag lady instantly. Winter clothes are frumpy and horrible in general. But it's the depression and constant illness that's the worst. The period between Boxing Day and new year sucks. No school or work, lots of stuff still shut and can't really go out due to the cold and early darkness. Contrast it with a decent summer where you're eating chips in your shorts on the seafront at 8pm. No contest. Just seen that forecast is good for the weekend though! 22 for Saturday 🤞🏻

Me. I get thoroughly depressed. The colours of the trees are pretty, but it's still signifies dying and decay. The light hours of the days are so few, even in the SW of England, and it's cold and damp. I always seem to think it gets warmer come March but then April hits you with constant bloody rain and it's not actually warm until May/June. We seem to have 3 months of reasonable/decent weather. The rest is just depressing.

MaryBerriesNiece · 17/09/2019 19:37

I hate it too. There is no joy in cosy jumpers, sparkly lights and sitting with a blanket on near a roaring fire for me. I despise dark nights, dark mornings and short days. I much prefer the warmth of summer and hours of daylight. I took control a few years ago and bought a SAD light box, I also have a lumie alarm clock for winter. I take extra vitamin D as well as St John’s Wort. My DH installed garden lights so I can get out in the greenhouse and I go to HIIT classes 3 nights a week.

We also have a week on the sun in Feb/March so we have something to look forward to after Christmas.

What I really look forward to is the shortest day in December because I know the nights will slowly start to get longer again.

LondonJax · 17/09/2019 19:38

I love spring and autumn, not so keen on winter and detest summer with a vengeance! I burn really easily so have to wear sun protection from late June so feel sticky all the time quite apart from the sweatiness and lack of cool air at night - yuck! Nope, you can keep summer - I'll have the moderate seasons every time.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 17/09/2019 19:50

Hate it-hate the fact that the evenings are darker. It's still quite warm and sunny here but I know it's going to get colder and damper soon. If we had lovely crisp winters I could cope with it better but we don't, they're just endlessly grey and wet.

bobstersmum · 17/09/2019 19:52

I used to absolutely love winter, pre kids. Now, with 3 little dc I dread it. Mostly for the constant illnesses!

LoonyLunaLoo · 17/09/2019 20:02

I hate it too and also suffer from SAD and Raynaulds syndrome (poor circulation causing painful hands and feet).

I also take St John’s Wort and a multitude of different vitamins but it feels ridiculous that I have to medicate myself against the weather!

We too have had a wash out summer (Lancashire) and now we’ve got endless grey to look forward to for the next 6 months. I’m really feeling it already this year. Not to gloat, but we do actually have a holiday booked to Turkey in half term and Australia at Christmas so I’m going to get some sunshine this winter. I literally can’t wait!

SomeoneInTheLaaaaaounge · 17/09/2019 20:03

Me too my depression has already kicked up a notch!!!! Bloody brilliant. But it won’t be a patch to January & February feels like punching myself in the face every day.

ReginaGeorgeous · 17/09/2019 20:47

Me, I bloody hate winter. I hate the dark, the cold, the damp and the never ending grey.

The last few years have been made bearable by jetting off to the tropics for some winter sun in January, but now DD is at school that's no longer an option.

Portulaca · 17/09/2019 20:52

I have CFS & Fibromyalgia, both of which feel much better in warn weather when I can get out in sunshine and go for a walk. In winter, trapped indoors longer, I tend to feel much worse.

Smellslikebiscuits · 17/09/2019 20:57

Hate the lack of daylight, and how mucky everything is... All the falling leaves that just turn the paths filthy!
Roll on Spring!

SudowoodoVoodoo · 17/09/2019 20:59

Those crisp frosty winter mornings... where do MNers live that actually experience more than a handful of these each year??? I've no issue with them, the sunlight is very welcome, but the reality is week upon week of cloud/ fog/ drizzle/ heavy rain with little respite. Similar with snow. A nice dump of snow that is actually suitable for sledging/ snowballing etc is a rarity. If there is snow, it's often just enough to cause traffic misery, then go slushy then turn to grey ice for a few days.

Titsywoo · 17/09/2019 21:00

I like autumn and winter for the Sept to Dec part as there is lots going on. Jan to March is depressing though unless it snows. What I hate is getting ill more - I get about 3 colds through the winter (never used to - must be an age thing!).
