Can ice cream give you food poisoning?

Cos I’ve just got back from a lovely solo trip to the cinema to watch the Downton film, treated myself to an ice cream sundae for dinner. DP is on a night shift, so nice peaceful evening to myself.

I do not feel very well now, to put it bluntly! Cramping started as I drove home and I barely made it to the bathroom when I got in. Proper both ends, faint/dizzy/sweaty, the lot. Thinking of just bringing my duvet into the bathroom and camping here for the night tbh, don’t feel ‘safe’ too far from the loo!

I hate being ill when I’m on my own. If I pass out there’ll be no one to notice

I haven’t eaten much else today, some cook-from-frozen croissants for brekkie and pasta with jar sauce for lunch (it’s not been a 5-a-day day!). Must be the ice cream right? Is my boss going to think I’m faking if I’m not well enough to go in by the morning and tell her it’s due to dodgy Baskin Robbins at then cinema?

Could be a bug? Hope you feel better soon.

Ginfordinner · 15/09/2019 23:45

Yes it can. If it has melted and been refrozen, or not been kept in hygienic conditions. OH has had it from melted ice cream before. I hope you feel better soon.

Sadly, yes.

Hi OP
Sorry to hear this ,
But yes ice cream, anything can be off and give you a upset stomach .
What type of ice cream was it, ?

PancakeAndKeith · 15/09/2019 23:47

It could be poor hygiene in the ice cream scoop or the person serving.
Or could it be too much dairy?

fortifiedwithtea · 15/09/2019 23:50

Yes. Bought ice cream from a supermarket. On opening it looked like it had melted and frozen. Naively, I did not know this was a problem but I know now! I was ill.

DramaAlpaca · 15/09/2019 23:51

Unfortunately yes. DH was once extremely ill after eating ice cream from a van. It could only have been that as other than the ice cream we'd eaten the same for the past day or two. Fortunately for me I didn't have one.

OP, I really hope you feel better soon.

Superlooper · 15/09/2019 23:53

Yes but food poisoning bacteria can have a very long incubation period so it could be anything you ate in recent weeks. Or a bug.

avamiah · 15/09/2019 23:53

Me and my DD were in Bournemouth recently and we had hot dogs from a lovely little cafe there that we go to all the time .
She was fine but after about 45 mins I felt awful and was very sick, glad it was me and not her.
It can be anything , the temperature, storage .
Hope you feel better soon
X

It was a double scoop sundae. Choc and mint choc chip with hot fudge sauce and chocolate sprinkles. It was yummy.

Don’t think a bug because I am antisocial haven’t seen anyone apart from the dog since work yesterday morning. Dog is fine and has come to keep me company wondering why we’re sat on the floor.

Perhaps just all the dairy.... never had that this badly though.

Thanks for the solidarity vipers, I do feel sorry for myself!

Kyvia,
Sounds lovely , I have had similar myself over summer hols but I’d say it’s defo a bad ice cream , maybe sauce , sprinkles who knows but yes something wasn’t right .
I hope you feel better soon .
Also maybe call the cinema and speak to the manager so they can remove everything from sale .
