My Mum and Dad showed me what it's like to be kind to others, just by them being kind.

We lived next to an old lady when we were children and my Mum and Dad always looked out for her and did things for her. They were just always kind and polite to people.

I remember a story that we had read to us as children about a grumpy old man and this boy walked past him every day. One day the boy smiled at him and the man smiled back and was much more friendly and happy after that.

I know as an adult happiness isn't that simple but it always stuck with me and I always try and smile at people and be kind.

This brings back nice memories of childhood when I was still being ‘told’ about social graces.

From grandma: a smile and good manners go a long way
From dad: always serve everyone at the table before oneself, and to be fair
From mum: be humble and don’t make someone feel bad for being / having less than oneself

Lessons that have guided me all this time.

How to love and be loved. I knew with absolute certainty that my brothers and I were the most important thing in my parents life by a very long way.
