It looks like a carpenter bee to me.

Looks like a Hornet

Is it a deer fly? I can't see it's wing shape properly. If it has kind of a triangle wing profile, it might be.

The wings look similar to a BeeFly, though they have an enormous stickty out thing at the front that looks harmful but isnt

Can't see the back, but from the wing shape I'd opt for some form of hover fly.

I don’t know, but get a new bath mat.
It might have embedded a colony amongst the tufts.

Well, I found one of these in my kitchen last night! Never seen one before, other than in books (I love insects - it’s a character defect). Rescued it from a cobweb.

It's a hover fly. 🙂

Hornet hover fly I think

Some sort of hover fly I think. (Possibly hornet- or bee- mimic?) The big aviator sunglasses give it away.
