How to deal with Hate Crime

Hi
I hope this is ok but I have seen many posts on here asking how to deal with hate crime. I used to work on a project that supported victims of disability hate so I though the following tips may help

The term 'hate crime' can be used to describe a range of criminal behaviour where the perpetrator is motivated by hostility or demonstrates hostility towards the victim's disability, race, religion, sexual orientation or transgender identity (cps website)
It can also be someone who takes advantage of someone or targets them because it is easy to do so such as a neighbour with a learning disability who can’t fight back

To report hate crime you need to make sure when you report to ask for the crime/incident to be treated as a hate crime and recorded as such
You can report via usual channels or via the true vision website and then there is paper trail and quite often the website triggers a response from victim support or a disability charity who can help and support you.

Ask for the forces diversity officer to be involved as they are usually very good and have been specially trained

If you feel you are being harrassed in your own home or being targeted due to disability and you don’t feel the police are doing anything mention the Joanna Pilkington case and remind them since this case they have to take action
Ask for an assessment of vulnerability and an ASBRAC. This is a multi agency response involving housing, police, social services, environmental health, victim support and many many others. At this meeting actions are agreed and they have to be done.

I really hope this helps if anyone wants any other advice feel free to PM me

I know this is old but I wanted to thank you for posting this. Hate crime has got worse or at least a lot more visible in 2020.
