Swelling after vaccination

My dd had her 1 year jabs yesterday, is fine in herself but next to one of the injections her leg has swollen. Not under the pinprick, but an area about the size of a plum next to it. It’s also quite red where it swollen. Is this normal?

Has she had the tb vaccination? That typically forms a small pustule which eventually bursts (quite audibly might I add).

My son had that age 11 or so for the first time. Obviously I freaked out and went back to the surgery where they shrugged and said that happens all the time. Not to my kid, it doesn't, that's why I came back!

I wouldn't blame you for getting it checked out.

@BogglesGoggles it was the mmr the meningitis and hepatitis and pneumonia I think...probably something else as well the poor thing had 4 in one go. Doesn’t look like the kind of thing that will form a pustule. @CanISpeakToYourManager exactly. May give 111 a call and see what they say

I'm a practice nurse and give these vaccinations. Can be a normal reaction- shows the body is responding to the vaccine. I would give Calpol if she is uncomfortable and an anti histamine. Perhaps a cold compress too.

Bethanyg25 · 14/09/2019 20:02

@debka ok thanks...tried medicine before bed but she absolutely hates it and have run out of ideas to get it down her. Will try the cold compress if she seems to get uncomfortable

Baby DC3 had that. I didn't freak out. It took about a week to seem normal again.

Mine had it too. The area was very red and rock hard for serve days. The redness and swelling went down after a few days but a little, hard, pea sized nodule remained for months.

Ok, I think we had a bit of swelling in a sort of firm and hot to the touch kind of way with both kids after the mmr but it went down quite quickly. There is absolutely no harm in seeking medical attention here. It’s probably just a normal reaction but double checking is always best. I hope she feels better soon.
