Extreme discomfort/pain when pooping

My son is 6 weeks old Monday and formula feeding 3-4 hourly on 5oz cow and gate.
The past three days he has been extremely unsettled and having explosive nappies when he does open his bowels (usually twice daily) and can only sleep upright when myself or my husband is holding him. If we put him down he wakes after 10mins or so and I know he's really over tired. We use powder formula and one feed of ready made at night as 100% powder had him constipated and up until 3 days ago this worked. We used infacol in the past but it was constipating so stopped and used gripe water the past two days to see if it helped and it's made no difference so we've stopped as it's not making any difference.
Anyone got any advice on how to help baby? He's very grunty at night and just seems uncomfortable!

Hi, I have a 10 week old baby and we had similar issues. He was on cow and gate and became constipated and when he did go was upset. He also has awful trapped wind that made him scream and would only sleep on mine or my husbands chest on his tummy and upright. It turns out he is allergic to cows milk and the symptoms he was having were due to that plus reflux and colic which is why he wouldn’t be put down to sleep. We are now on special milk and medicine to aid his reflux and he is a different baby. It has taken weeks for it to fully work.
It would def be an idea to speak to your health visitor or gp and ask to be transferred to your local paediatric dept.
