Is this a migraine with aura?

I have had varying degrees of headache / migraine from debilitating in bed skull crunching pain to what feels like the start of a migraine, painful but doesn’t worsen to nausea and needing to lay in the dark (like today).

It’s one sided, over my right temple, more painful than a headache and hasn’t changed with analgesia, but what’s strange is the sensation over the top of my face - in the area an eye mask would be but only on one side - which is hard to describe. It’s almost numb, but not quite and tingles but not like pins and needles.

Is that an aura? I’m on the combined pill and over 40 and was warned about aura but as I’ve never had it, I don’t know how it feels! If the headaches are changing to include aura then I’ll have to come off the pill which I don’t want to do.

Sorry I should have been clearer - I got the implant because of horrible heavy periods, PMT, and migraines around my periods. It’s helping with all of those so far.

If it is then it raises the risk of strokes, that’s why they take you off it.

I get visual migraines. I have the coil which has stopped my periods completely!

Not all auras are visual. I had no idea until I was officially diagnosed - which was only about five years ago. I just never bothered as I didn’t think there was anything other thank OTC painkillers that would help; clearly my mum thought the same as I’ve suffered with them since I was a child.

My auras are not being able to speak, sometimes droopy eyes and general overall confusion.

I also took microgynon for prob a decade which I shouldn’t have done.

@SandunesAndRainclouds my neurologist is happy for me to be on the combined pill despite having migraines with aura, as weighing up everything it's the best thing for me contraceptive wise.

Afternooninthepark · 14/09/2019 10:14

FFSOMG has the coil made the aura migraines worse? I’m going to have to have one due to gynae problems but I don’t want anything to make the auras worse.

TwattingDog · 14/09/2019 16:50

The coil made no difference to my migraines FWIW.

FFSOMG · 14/09/2019 20:33

The coil hasn’t affected my visual migraines and the doctor didn’t say that it would.
