Is your UK driving licence expiring?

DVLA helpfully send you a letter to remind you well in advance (e.g. Aug for an Oct expiry). And handily they can link it up with your passport so no need for new pics or fannying about at the Post Office.

HOWEVER: don't do what I did and deal with it immediately so as not to forget, because they won't add on the remaining few months validity to the new one.

I would have waited till the last minute if I'd known that, especially as they say you can continue to drive before your new photocard arrives, as long as you've submitted online and got the references etc Angry

That’s useful to know. My reminder is on the fridge; I’ll leave it a bit longer.

I did exactly what you did and renewed it so have lost about 6 weeks. I don't think they give the warning until at the end of the application either so very frustrating.

I'd leave it to the day before expiry if I were you!

I still have a pink paper one that doesn't have to keep being renewed. I knew there must be something good about being oldGrin

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 12/09/2019 20:32

^ There's always one, isn't there....

Yeah I'm another one - an oldie with the original paper licence Grin

goingtotown · 12/09/2019 20:45

I’ve got the old green paper one, it lasts until you’re 70. I didn’t know that there’s a pink paper one.

DramaAlpaca · 12/09/2019 20:49

I exchanged my pink UK licence that would've lasted until I was 70 for an Irish licence that I have to renew every ten years (I live in Ireland). I'm still mildly annoyed about it. I only changed it because my paper licence was too tatty to read.

DramaAlpaca · 12/09/2019 20:50

Whoops, yes of course it was green. My Irish licence is pink.

A hint of bitterness there @BuzzShitbagBobbly GrinWink

I've lost over a year Angry. I phoned DVLA and got told, well you renewed it.

I'll never get that year back now.

I thought that UK paper ones aren't valid any more and you must change to the card with photo to use it in any meaningful sense. I've still got my paper one and I keep the photo one in the same cover with it

I think they are still valid licences, and you can use them till they expire, if all you need them for is to show a police officer or maybe proof of address. If your entitlement changes, or you move house etc, then I think they get replaced.
