Can I tell if a lord is real

mankyfourthtoe · 12/09/2019 13:44

A newish friend has revealed they're a 'lady' husband is a lord.
I asked interested questions but it felt vague.
Is there a way to tell if it's genuine?

Does in matter? There used to be a book in the library clled Burkes Peerage that you can look someone up. Bound to be an online equivalent

MulticolourMophead · 12/09/2019 13:47

Burke's Peerage is available online.

stucknoue · 12/09/2019 13:47

All people with honours are listed in various publications, I forget the name but you can look online

PrincessHoneysuckle · 12/09/2019 13:48

You can buy lord and lady titles cant you?

ZorbaTheHoarder · 12/09/2019 13:57

Is their surname Voldemort?

MsSquiz · 12/09/2019 14:00

You can buy titles online.
DH bought me one as a wedding gift, and technically I could use it on legal documents if I wanted too (it's a running joke between us about me being a lady)

DriftingLeaves · 12/09/2019 14:02

Easily bought. A bit silly, really.

Evilmorty · 12/09/2019 14:03

Lady Muck of Muckington?

iklboo · 12/09/2019 14:04

My folks bought DS a lordship (1 square foot of land somewhere with a nominal title).

jenthelibrarian · 12/09/2019 14:09

You need to make them bleed to see if they have real blue blood.
I suggest a minor 'oops!' with a silver cake slice, or similar posh bit of cutlery.

Not really. Look them up online, or ask for assistance at your friendly local library, unless it's been closed down.

SoftBlocks · 12/09/2019 14:09

I think you can change your name by deed poll to Lord or Lady.

mankyfourthtoe · 12/09/2019 14:11

I've seen the list of the lords, not on there.

Lord Voldemort 😂

I'll see if Burke's is online.

No reason really other than I'm really nosy

why would someone say they were that if they weren’t? It’s so easily provable, as pp’s have said.

margaritasbythesea · 12/09/2019 14:15

I would love to buy a title for DH for Christmas. His name (not English) defaults to Lord on autocorrect, so it's a running joke between us. Can anyone tell me where you do it?

iklboo · 12/09/2019 14:19

Places like THIS do them.

poshme · 12/09/2019 14:19

They'd be in 'who's who'
That might be in a big local library,
Or in debretts people of today. Library might have that.
Who's who is red, debretts is navy blue.
Or Wikipedia?

Evilmorty · 12/09/2019 14:24

Loads of people would say, in certain areas people love being the lord and lady of the manor. Horses, dogs, green wellies and wax jackets. Usually he’s a cabbie from the east end and she does your “colours” or works in M&S during the Christmas period. They keep carp and go up the west end to watch a show and eat at an Angus steak house once a month because it keeps her happy.

ShirleyPhallus · 12/09/2019 14:27

Is the the lord of the dance?

QueenofallIsee · 12/09/2019 14:27

Maybe they bought one? A mate of mine from work actually bought a Lord title from somewhere and it is actually legal for him to use it. He does when he books into hotels because they tend to upgrade him!

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 12/09/2019 14:28

thepeerage.com/

Check them out on here.

margaritasbythesea · 12/09/2019 14:28

Thanks iklboo!

littlepaddypaws · 12/09/2019 14:29

my guinea pig is titled 'lady of the dining room estate' very superior to humans and looks down her nose at everyone i'm not sure if she's in who's who or debretts though ? Grin

Ohyesiam · 12/09/2019 14:34

why would someone say they were that if they weren’t? It’s so easily provable, as pp’s have said.

My thought was the opposite. Who would say that of themselves if it were true? By adulthood you’d be used to it/ see the pitfalls/ not want to come across as a knob, so you’d not mention it
I have a friend who can s a lady and I only found out by seeing something addressed to her . I innocently thought she just happened to live in a mansion in Scotland!

IsadoraQuagmire · 12/09/2019 14:36

Someone I know lives in a (Georgian manor) house that had a Lordship title included. He doesn't use it though!

littlepaddypaws · 12/09/2019 14:37

some people want to be seem as superior to others, most are just knobs and liars to boot.
