Can I tell if a lord is real

mankyfourthtoe · 12/09/2019 13:44

A newish friend has revealed they're a 'lady' husband is a lord.
I asked interested questions but it felt vague.
Is there a way to tell if it's genuine?

My ex is heir to two titles. They’re proper ones and one will give him or (hopefully) his parents a seat at the next coronation. The land and most of the valuables disappeared a couple of centuries ago. Everyone is completely normal, live in regular houses and have bog standard jobs (IT, engineering, etc) and no one uses the titles. Basically the whole thing is generally considered a bit of an embarrassing anachronism though nice to know who your ancestors were.

dudsville · 12/09/2019 15:31

Define "real"!

dudsville · 12/09/2019 15:32

Define "proper"!!!

Ratonastick · 12/09/2019 15:32

And by the sound of it, he’s probably related to akkakk

SherbetSaucer · 12/09/2019 15:46

My ex is heir to two titles as well!

He’s the Duke of Pricksville and Lord Twat of House Smallknob.

Herocomplex · 12/09/2019 15:50

Women can have Lady bestowed on them though, it’s not just in relation to a man?
Lady Brady

timeisnotaline · 12/09/2019 15:51

It’s like telling if gold is real isn’t it? You bite it and see if there are teethmarks?

SconeofDestiny · 12/09/2019 16:06

Could it be a European peerage?

ethelredonagoodday · 12/09/2019 16:08

My relations work and live on a private estate and my aunt is the housekeeper for a Lord and Lady.

Everybody in the village knows who they are and would address them as Lady and Lord X. But outside of that small village you wouldn't know that they were titled because they behave like ordinary people, and don't particularly use their titles (unless doing charitable work etc). They do have a driver, Butler and housekeepers/staff etc... which I still marvel at in this day and age!

PeterthePainter · 12/09/2019 16:08

What you can buy on line is the "lordship" of a manor. It's a feudal hang over with very little to it other than the name in most cases. It does not entitle you to call yourself "Lord" or "Lady".

xsquared · 12/09/2019 16:09

There is a way of looking it up op. DH did after he had seen something at a friend's house with his title on it. He googled it and it did indeed confirm that he was a
Viscount. Friend has never brought it up in conversation or anything like that, and he and his family are very down to earth.

SpamChaudFroid · 12/09/2019 16:09

If it's on her cc, than unless she's changed her first name to Lady then I'd say she must be a Lady then as you can't legally buy and sell titles, (apart from Lord of the Manor, which means something different.) "Titles for sale" are a novelty item.

What does her Lady title stand for, ie. baroness, earless of such and such. That's where the family seat is, (unless they've sold it)

I think most organisations just ask your title and have a write in box for anything other than the common ones. You can self identify as whatever you wish.

It's terribly fashionable these days, to say you are a lady when you aren't one by birth.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 12/09/2019 16:45

What sort of a sad sack buys a lord/lady title for themselves (or anyone else for that matter!) CRINGE! Grin

Rachelover60 · 12/09/2019 16:51

Thoroughly feel them up, you'll notice a difference if he is a lord.

NotDavidTennant · 12/09/2019 17:00

You can specify whatever title you like on a credit card, it doesn't mean you're legally entitled to it.

SpamChaudFroid · 12/09/2019 17:09

I did not know that about CCs Blush. So I could choose Dr as my title even though I'm not one?

BaronessHildebrand · 12/09/2019 17:20

@akkakk yes I am an authority on the Scottish feudal system. Let me know which bits in particular you'd like explained. I'm happy to defer to you on the peerage system, as I have only a passing knowledge of this, but you seem to be extremely unclear about the feudal system.

mindutopia · 12/09/2019 17:27

Oh this is very interesting. We moved to a new house recently and all our neighbours signed a card for us and one of them signed it Lady Elizabeth So and So. We know 90% of the neighbours already (none of them are an Elizabeth), so it’s been an enduring mystery who the Lady is because there are only like 3 houses we don’t know. None of them appear grand enough to obviously house her ladyship. We’ve been super curious if she (whoever she is is a really Lady) or just a bit of a eccentric. Must check...

NoTheresa · 12/09/2019 17:37

PrestonNotHeston

if they're genuinely posh they'd never actually tell you.

This^

A bona fide sad sack.

GinNotGym19 · 12/09/2019 17:56

@SherbetSaucer haha love that, mine is Lord Liesalot

akkakk · 12/09/2019 18:34

www.Baronytitles.com
Is this site legit then?

legitimate? yes, it is legal - and carefully worded
ethical? - debatable! the implication is that you can buy yourself into the aristocracy with a title - and you can't! So, it is a sort of scam as it positions it as something it isn't really...

@BaronessHildebrand
yes I am an authority on the Scottish feudal system.
I think our main contribution to the Scottish feudal system was probably the clearances - so best not to have that discussion here! Grin
