Confident DS now "missing" me

DS is 5. Started Year 1 last week. Same school. Plenty of friends in his and other classes, even though his reception class has been mixed across 4 classes.

Always been confident and not the kind to get upset at drop off.

Over the previous week he's gone from kiss and then strolling in happily to telling me he will miss me and being upset.

I spoke to his teacher and she said he's fine in class, confident and asking plenty of questions.

This morning I said to DS i needed to go out earlier than usual so DH would be taking him to school (I do drop off, DH does pick up M-Th and I do both on a Friday) He was almost hysterical about how he will miss me.

He's sleeping well - in fact last night did 12 hours and would have had more if I had left him. He said he's enjoying school, his new class and being with his friends when asked.

Is this something that children usually go through when moving into a new year?

It’s a while since mine were that age (late teens) so things might have changed but I remember year 1 being very different to reception in terms of having to sit down more and do more desk based work etc which one of mine found difficult for a while.
