She has each set of numbers equalling 10 but after the units they would need to equal 9 because you would also add the carried 1 (I think)

sleepismysuperpower1 · 11/09/2019 19:04

8127 and 1873 should add to make 10000 x

sleepismysuperpower1 · 11/09/2019 19:05

oh i didnt read it as an adding sum in colums, just did the sum! what pp said above is right x

Yes, select any numbers bonds to majestic 10 in the ones (units) column. Carry the one. Fill in all the other columns with numbers that add to 9 each time.(there are a number if correct solutions.)

falgelednl · 11/09/2019 19:06

Majestic???
Should be ‘make’

Wellmet · 11/09/2019 19:07

She's not carried any ones! The last column is fine, but the others all need to add up to 9 as you'll continuously carry a 1 across to get 0 in each column.

ForeverBubblegum · 11/09/2019 19:08

5+5 = 10 so carry on 10,
But the next column would then become 4+6+1 = 11, then you would have 1 at the bottom and carry 10.

You need the numbers in columns 2,3&4 to add to 9 in so that with the extra 1 it becomes 10.

I think the hint given is not very helpful at all! Apart from the 1s column you don't worry any of them to be number pairs of 10.

Theworldisfullofgs · 11/09/2019 19:13

When you add a unit to make ten you are left with a two digit number. Therefore you need to carry over the ten, which means you add it onto the next. Just asked my yr 9 boy as they do maths different now! Add a line underneath for you carry overs. You add this to the top number before doing the next part of the sum.
E.g.
5 +5=10
The add the 1 to the 4 to make 5 before doing the next bit.
