Do I need a padded room or does any of my fellow mumsnettters still have teddies?

Hi all,
I want some views on this.I have a menagerie of soft toys and I love them as I have chronic pain, anxiety and low moods and I like to cuddle up in bed with them and crochet when I am having a bad day with my aforementioned problems. My brother said it is ridiculous that I am an adult that still sleeps with teddies. What are your thoughts?

I have 3 soft toy wolves in bed with me and a cuddly toy vampire at the foot of the bed. You are fine!

FleurNancy · 10/09/2019 21:13

I sleep with one but I don't take it away with me. I'd probably not shout it from the rooftops either but I just sort of tuck it under my chin and sleep much better that way.

HavelockVetinari · 10/09/2019 21:14

I should probably NC for this but in the interests of honesty - I sleep with a comfort blanket! It isn't the one I had as a child, it's not a sentimental thing, but I find it hard to sleep without a satin-edged blanket by my face. Any one will do but I need the silky feeling for the best night's sleep.

This thread has made me sad because no one has brought me a fluffy teddy in years and I forgot how much i used to LOVE soft toys.

I still have my old childhood bear hidden away in a cupboard but it's fabric not fluffy fur and while I still love her she's a bit rough to snuggle up with....kinda like me Grin

I think your perfectly fine and your brother is a bit of a dick.

Biancadelrioisback · 10/09/2019 21:25

Tbf Havelock that's exactly what my 'throw' is for on my bed.

I find it odd but you’re not harming anyone.

I didn’t even have a comfort object as a child and neither have my kids! I suppose that’s why I think it’s weird!

Dieu · 10/09/2019 21:32

No. I didn't like them as a child, and still don't Grin

darkriver19886 · 10/09/2019 21:32

I am 31 and sleep with a white giant dog. I also take him to therapy. I also have a collection of other teddies. Please ignore the clutter.

It's not harming anyone really.

Just for clarification, I don’t give a shite what he thinks, I’ll do what I want not what he wants.

@Noseynails

Good!

I confess that I don’t like cuddly toys being ill treated and if I’m in a toy shop I will pick them up off the floor or if they are rammed in (Ikea) I will try and sit them upright!

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 10/09/2019 21:50

I still have my childhood bear in my bedroom, and there's a Jiminy Cricket that was the first gift I ever bought for DH.
We have a family Neil the Sloth in the living room, from the sofa shop, he lives on the back of the sofa, and he has a wife called Lily Sloth cos the children thought he looked lonely. He wears a Hawaiian shirt Grin

Havelock and Biancadelrioisback
I was given a cuddly blanket to sleep with the day of my christening (I was 5 days old), when it died of old age I spent ages to find the exact same "feel" again. I am in my fifties.
So I have a teddy and a blanket.

BeanBag7 · 10/09/2019 22:24

I sleep with my teddy that I had since I was a baby. My DH doesnt mind, in fact he bought a matching one so he could have a cuddle too. We also bought one for our daughter so we all have our own versions Smile

Benjispruce · 10/09/2019 22:28

I have a DH so no need for a teddy in my bed. I do have some from my childhood but they’re in the loft.

Ginger1982 · 10/09/2019 22:30

@Benjispruce is that because he's very hairy?

Ginkypig · 10/09/2019 22:38

I have a whole host of soft toys on the back of the couch, I call them the army.

Some of them were gifts from the kids one or two was from Dp there are a few from childhood I also have one that belonged to my father I brought it home after my dad died. It wears a little outfit that was actually the first outfit my mother made for me as a baby.

I am not a childish adult I just like having a few cuddly toys on the back of the couch because they are from or are attached to someone I love or childhood. Who the fuck cares what others think of your decoration choices op. Some people have Shitty art or collect the most hideous ornaments or collects comics or owns a million pairs of shoes and handbags or have massive family canvases and none of those might be my thing but if someone else loves them then that's nothing to do with me or anyone else!

shiningstar2 · 10/09/2019 22:44

I am 67 years old and so is my teddy. He lives on a shelf in my bedroom these days. He is threadbare and my lovely husband has patched up his paws and fixed his eye when it fell out. Smile

unicorncupcake · 10/09/2019 22:46

I have a cuddly monkey called ‘nanas’ (as in bananas) that DH bought for me about 15 years ago when I went on a two week school trip abroad without him (my first residential as a member of staff) and I sleep with him every night at home. I hold his hand as I go to sleep. I am perfectly capable of sleeping without him, but it does no harm 🤷‍♀️ I also have a cuddly pink sparkly unicorn that lives by the bed that was a present from a lovely pupil a couple of years ago and it makes me every time I look at it Grin

dayslikethese1 · 10/09/2019 22:57

I have LOADS. Most are in spare room but also 3 bears and a lynx in my bed currently. Grin

cannycat20 · 10/09/2019 23:06

Agree with many statements above: no one is EVER too old for a bear. Of ANY description. Or a stuffed five foot dragon with a wonky neck, or an owl with a mortar board and glasses, or a cheeky panda, or a giant chimp. All of which may or may not share my living space and listen to my troubles on occasions. Ahem.

Honestly, if it's not hurting anyone, and it might even be helping, is it anyone's business but yours?

(Depending on how tough they are and what the labels say, I do occasionally wash mine in the washing machine or stick them in the freezer in a plastic bag to kill any nasties they might have picked up in the previous 18 months or so. But then we do have cats.... the only other person I've met in my life who didn't like soft toys didn't like animals either. Or people, all that much if they weren't from the correct "naice" background...)

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 10/09/2019 23:10

DW has Pandy, who is a bit younger than she is. Koko the clown, who was given to her when she was 8, had his own chair in her bedroom. I was always afraid he might join in.

My own comfort thing is my welding test piece. I rub it every day, feeling the texture of the join. I put it into DD's hand when she was born.

MrsBirkett · 11/09/2019 00:21

I sleep with 4 little teds every night,,one from childhood the others given to me by my DDs over the years. Also sleep with cat(real) and very understanding DH.

BeepBeeeep · 11/09/2019 00:39

I have a very threadbare teddy. He's actually a panda. He is missing an eye and half of his nose.
He has been on every holiday with me as both a child and an adult.
Years ago when I was a child my mum made a kind of passport for him and he got quite a few stamps in it.
It will be his 54th birthday soon.
