Tips for learning vocab / language

DS has started secondary school and is learning a language for the first time.

He has to learn 10 phrases. What's the best way to do that? I seem to remember I wrote them out over and over to get them into my head.

Is there a better way?

my ds writes them out each 10 times, then repeats them aloud in different orders

Mixing them up so they make funny phrases with no sense can help to stick in the mind.

spaced retrieval practise - i.e. trying to remember to vocal pairs (you can use flash cards for this) and then making sure that you practise them regularly.

Programs such as Quizlet or Anke do this on the computer and offer activities other than just flash cards.
