I have been doing this for 9 months and I love it. However, WFH can get very lonely!

Anyone else?

@janna12
I realised that it was you who mentioned Cambly. Any info on how it works and how you get paid would be great.
Thanks.

Tltl · 14/09/2019 11:35

You get paid every Monday on cambly via PayPal (if you've earned more then 20 dollars)
It's very flexible, you can pick up priority hours when you would like, no minimum requirement, but the pay is a bit rubbish, 10 dollars for a whole hour but you only get paid for time talked to students. So it's often below 10, as you may be sitting on a priority hour but only get 3 callers x 15mins

MaybeDoctor · 14/09/2019 11:39

Thanks. So what’s a priority hour as opposed to a normal hour?

I do, but it's a bit different to most, I'd imagine.
A lady I know started her own website, with English lessons on (there are hundreds) and the students are given an assignment to complete at the end of each page.

They send them to me, and I correct them and send them back, and also answer any questions they might have. So I don't teach English as such, but I am involved with that sort of thing. It's only one client though, I have many, and I mostly do writing and proofreading, but this is definitely an interesting little sideline.

FWIW, I used to find WFM lonely, but now I'm so busy that the hours fly by until DH's home anyway!

They route calls towards you, but if your just appearing online without a priority hour you need to wait for people to choose you. Basically more calls on priority hours

Coco6 · 14/09/2019 14:37

That sounds great Sunshine!

I'd be very interested in this too if you wouldn't mind sending me a DM with the details please. Thank you!

MaybeDoctor · 15/09/2019 10:36

@janna12

I am thinking of giving Cambly a go, but a bit worried about some reviews I read that mentioned bad behaviour from male students. Has this been a problem? If you are in the UK and teach daytime hours, where do your students tend to call from?

Also, can you be logged in but keep other windows open on your PC?

Thanks.

Tltl · 15/09/2019 10:45

In cambly you can the camera off for trial students and turn it on after you hear them speak and see they're not doing anything inappropriate.
Ive only had one terrible student, just very very rude rather then anything on camera and I hid my profile from him afterwards.

Another one jumping in! I'd be interested in learning more @Coco6 if you have the time to PM me! Thank you xx

ViserionTheDragon · 15/09/2019 17:01

Hi OP, thank you very much for starting this thread! Could I possibly trouble you for a PM of the company too? I used to teach in China and I've got a CELTA and PGCE. I hope you don't regret starting this thread given the number of PM requests! Wink

Star789 · 15/09/2019 17:10

I'd also appreciate a pm please @Coco6 x

Weepants143 · 15/09/2019 17:14

everthepessimist · 15/09/2019 18:34

@Coco6 Could you PM me as well please? That hourly rate is higher than lots I've seen so I would love to know which company you're working for.

I would also be very grateful if you could PM me details please.

AmIDoingThisRight · 15/09/2019 20:49

@Coco6, would you mind very much sending me a PM as well? Thank you.

runoutofnamechanges · 15/09/2019 20:56

@Coco6 I'd love it if you could PM me the company name too. I hope you get commission for referrals!

student26 · 15/09/2019 21:13

Hi OP, could you PM me too please? This looks really interesting and something I’d really like to look into with my TEFL certificate. Thank you.

Q1w2e3 · 15/09/2019 21:20

Could you please send me the company name too? Thanks very much.

BookWitch · 15/09/2019 21:34

I do.
I used to teach ESL in Asia (I have PGCE and CELTA)
I'm back in the Uk now and I did look into teaching for some of the Chinese agencies but I found the peak hours hard to commit to.

I've ended up working for a French agency teaching mostly businessmen/women. The Client purchased a certain number of hours (30-40 is typical), and the first six or so hours are scheduled for you after that you just arrange with client when it's mutually convenient. Having some French helps as all the admin is in French, but have met some interesting people, like a lady who runs her own vineyard!

It's working well for me at the moment. I taught close to 60 hours in August, will be closer to 90 in September and it is fitting around my part time uni course

TheCanterburyWhales · 16/09/2019 13:05

i think I'm going to cave in and ask the OP for a PM as well having just received 2 whopping bills out of the blue!
Despite being an EFL teacher for donkey,'s years I've steered clear of online because of a weird feeling of having a screen between me and the student.
Could I know the name too please? in the meantime I'm going to apply to csmbly and a couple of others.

Coco6 · 16/09/2019 17:43

Wow so much interest in this!! Sorry if I've missed any pm's GrinBlush

kerburdem71 · 16/09/2019 17:56

Interesting. How does it work with holidays? Do you have to take your 10 core weekly hours with you, so to speak?

tobee · 16/09/2019 20:06

Ooh this is amazing to see this as I got a CELTA qualification a few years ago and I've just been thinking whether I could teach online.

However, I'm pretty computer illiterate and have only taught one hour weekly one on ones at home or taught asylum seekers on a very casual basis, teaching people pretty much on an improvised basis, depending on who turned up!

I'm worried I would be rubbish. That you can't teach an old dog (me) new tricks?!?But the idea of not having virtual strangers coming to my house is appealing.

I got so excited to see this thread I need to read all the posts properly. Grin
