Sandwich conflict

Please settle an argument. My DH thinks that only one slice of bread should be buttered when making a sandwich. I think that it is wrong because fillings fall out and the sandwich is dry.

Depends on the sandwich. If egg or tuna mayonnaise, I don't use any butter at all. If something like cheese and pickle, I'll do butter on one side and the pickle on the other. If ham and tomato or similar, I'll do butter on both sides. But it's personal preference. If someone else likes something different, that's fine.

The only thing I ask is that you don't call anything except actual real butter 'butter'. There should be a special place in hell for anyone who uses the word 'butter' when the product in question is spread/margarine etc. I've had to have words with more than one cafe, pub or sandwich shop on this matter.

Butter both sides. Your DH is indeed incorrect.

ellzebellze · 08/09/2019 21:01

Apparently my grandma did this in the war during rationing when there wasn't much butter to be had. Perhaps it just became the norm in some families and has carried on for years.

This is the most British thread ever Grin

My answer would be that you put mayo on one slice and mustard on the other, and always add cheese. But sandwiches are almost always disappointing no matter how they're made.

WMPAGL · 08/09/2019 21:02

God, I love this place!

Mysterian, you're blowing my mind with your actual logic for what I could only have defended with the instinctual certainty deep in my bones that buttering two slices is just. plain. correct.

leghairdontcare · 08/09/2019 21:02

As a general rule, butter both sides but...it is flexible depending on the filling. So what's he putting in these lopsided butter sandwiches?

WindsweptEgret · 08/09/2019 21:03

I don't use butter on sandwiches, only on bread with soup.

RosesAndRaindrops · 08/09/2019 21:04

Two sides!! Anyone who only butters one side is a weirdo Grin
Although if there's on;y enough butter left to do one side it's perfectly acceptable.
If there's plenty though you're just being strange lol

Oliack1417 · 08/09/2019 21:07

No butter on sandwiches.. loads on toast etc, but def not on sandwiches 😮

NapsAndTea · 08/09/2019 21:07

My husband grew up only buttering one side! I have since corrected that 😂👌🏼

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 08/09/2019 21:08

Depends on the sandwich though, doesn't it. Sometimes you want to spread the bread with something else. Or it's a bacon sandwich, so you need the extra space for more bacon Grin

nocoolnamesleft · 08/09/2019 21:09

Butter on both slices. LTB.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 08/09/2019 21:12

YABothBU. Butter has no place in sandwiches.

SunshineAngel · 08/09/2019 21:13

I know plenty of people have already said this, but definitely both sides.

Me and my partner have very different opinions on sandwich culture too, but my response is always that he's very welcome to make his own if he doesn't like the way I do it.. then suddenly, for some reason, mine are fine!

dudsville · 08/09/2019 21:13

Sandwiches should not be buttered. It isn't toast. There's usually a fat or dressing in the sandwich content. No butter.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 08/09/2019 21:13

Both sides and dont ever have normal bread on a bacon/egg/sausage sandwich its toasted all the way here

Aargh silly phone.

It came to a head yesterday when he made Dd(4) a grated cheese sandwich and lots of the cheese fell out because it did not have butter to help hold it to the bread.

Chocolatehat · 08/09/2019 21:19

For all of you posters saying no butter at all. I am shocked. It makes me wonder what else you do.
Do you put butter on scones before the cream and jam?

OP posts:
NoLeopard · 08/09/2019 21:19

Eurrgh! Only one side! It's the nicest part of the sandwich followed by fresh tiger bread followed by the filling. I also butter rolls for hotdogs and burgers but that's probably a whole other thread....

SisterSistine · 08/09/2019 21:21

Count yourself lucky. My husband does not like butter so he does not butter the bread AT ALL.

cheeseislife8 · 08/09/2019 21:23

Two sides! Otherwise what's the point? You may need to LTB on grounds of incompatibility

WindsweptEgret · 08/09/2019 21:27

Just jam on sultana scones here, scones are made with butter already.

Crunchymum · 08/09/2019 21:30

Both sides, unless it's peanut butter. Then one side butter and the other peanut butter.

  • this is how my DC like peanut butter sarnies.
user1493494961 · 08/09/2019 21:39

All down to personal preference, no right or wrong.
