Removing newly pierced earrings for school

DD1 had hers pierced just before the end of the summer term so they've been in for nearly 8 weeks now. She's just started secondary and tomorrow she has her first PE lesson and she has to take the earrings out. She can't do it herself and doesn't want anyone else to do it (she suffers severe anxiety). If I take them out for her in the morning are they going to be a problem to put back in when I get back from work in the evening? I know it's probably a piece of string question, but roughly speaking. I can't think of an alternative.

They should be fine out for the day at 8 weeks.

I'd leave them out but give her the earrings to take with her and she can slip them in and out (no butterfly on) at lunch if you're concerned about them healing

We had exactly the same scenario here. Just take them out in the morning and put them back in in the evening, they won’t grow shut that quickly!

DD’s have been done for seven weeks and we changed them last week as we lost the screw on bit of the original (was done in a piercing place). She’s left them out twice now and they’ve been fine getting different ones in. She did react to the first pair so it’s a bit trial and error seeing what metal works for her.

Our school lets them put surgical tape over the earrings. Is that a possibility?

ineedaholidaynow · 08/09/2019 20:06

I thought some schools say to put plasters/tape over the earrings

KittyMcKitty · 08/09/2019 20:13

Don’t tape them earnings can still get caught and ripped out.

She should be absolutely fine - take them out before she leaves for school and put them in as soon as she’s back. My daughter had a second piercing in each of her ears a week or so before the summer holidays and took them out for some theatre performances at the end of August. Dd got her first piercings in year 7 and it took her a while to be able to put her earrings in herself so I would advise lots of practice at home!

Just dont leave them out too long with newly pierced ears. DC has on occasion forgot to put back in and was tricky after a few days in the first year

You can get spare plastic or metal backs for stud earrings -

Rockbird · 08/09/2019 20:49

Thanks all. I'll take them out before I go. Typically, her first PE lesson is on a day when I'm at work stupidly early and home a good bit later than her!

I would definitely tell her to take the earrings with her and push them through the holes a few times during the day, just to be on the safe side.

When I had mine done I needed to keep them in for about 3-4 months which I stuck to religiously, then one night for some unknown reason I took them out quite late before bed and tried to put them back in early the next morning before school (so could've only slept 6-7 ish hours) and that's it, they were closed enough for even a professional to not be able to get the earrings through and I was completely gutted. Had to wait over a year for them to close properly so I could get them re-pierced.

Dd had her ears pierced at the beginning of the holidays. I asked the lady who done the piercing about p.e and how long she can leave them out for. She recommended that dd practices/learns to put them in and take them out asap as she said they ideally go straight back in after p.e

Rockbird · 09/09/2019 13:25

Well I took them out this morning and she's taken them into school with her. I emailed her year head (about something else) but mentioned them and she said they'd sort her out.

I find it easier to get dds earrings back in after a shower or when her ear lobes are wet. I spray the piercings cleaner on her ears before putting new ones in

Rockbird · 09/09/2019 21:05

Well the earrings were out all day and I put them back in when I got home. No problems but DD1 is a wimp!

@Rockbird - I am seeking to take action against the AfPE for generating this ridiculous, OTT wave of policy change that is sexist and unnecessary. Let me know if you are interested in joining the cause.
