Help - double calpol dose

Hi all, my just 8 year old son has just had a double dose of calpol - husband thought the syringe was 2.5ml. We phoned NHS direct and they are calling back in 30 mins, but wondering what to do in meantime - let him go to sleep (it's bedtime), get him to throw up? He is very slim and has only just moved on to 7.5ml of calpol 6+ - he's had 15ml. Would be very relieved to hear if I'm panicking unnecessarily!

I wouldn't panic. It's not unusual to have an initial 'loading' dose and then smaller doses through the day. Just make sure you stick to the maximun daily dose.

I'm no doctor though and NHS direct may give you other advice

Hey, don't worry, In my experience (as a nurse) doses are usually under anyway. We often give whacking great loading doses to kids worked out on their size. Do you know what your son weighs and I can tell you roughly what would be ok for him? Honestly will be fine I'm sure Smile

Let him go to bed!

Indeed, let him go to bed, then take the 111 advice when it gets to you. You are right to treat paracetamol with respect though.

cherrypiemay16 · 08/09/2019 19:35

Your son would've had 375mg. Say he's somewhere around 20kg a big but ok dose would be 400mg (you could give that 3 times in 24 hours)
60mg per kg in 24 hours is the max

let him go to bed.
just don't give him more paracetamol for the next 24 hours, but you could use ibuprofen if it's for fever/pain.

you look up in the bnf how to calculate the max dose for your dc's weight.

Weigh him and then put him to bed.

We did similar once, I dosed DD then so did DH! Medical advice was to miss the next dose and not to exceed the 24 hour limit

How's your little one? As I went to bed I realised I'd misread your message sorry! Sure all is ok. What did 111 say? X
