What's Leeds like?

I don't think I've ever been!

I have read good things about it- but does anyone know it well?

We are taking DS up to have a look at the uni in a couple of weeks.

I live there! I love it here, was born here but lived away for a few years before settling back. I work at one of the university's. It's a good student city

AuntieMarys · 08/09/2019 16:10

It's great. Massive student population. Close to fabulous countryside.
One negative is transport in the city.

FanSpamTastic · 08/09/2019 16:10

Leeds is a very vibrant city. We were there this weekend at the university open day.

The university campus is compact and easily accessible to the city centre.

Lots of posters up everywhere welcoming new students to the city.

It's a fabulous city.
My son is in his fourth year at Uni and intends to stay in the area afterwards. Great nightlife, good shopping, so many places to eat.
I'd live there if I could!

AuntieMarys · 08/09/2019 16:22

It's got one of the highest graduation retention rates

PaquitaVariation · 08/09/2019 16:29

Lovely city, nightmare to drive in.

howelllikethewind · 08/09/2019 16:30

I love Leeds! It’s fab

Hoppinggreen · 08/09/2019 16:31

I like it, we live halfway between Leeds and Manchester and while Manchester has more going on I think I prefer Leeds.
I relocate people to both and the feedback I get is that Leeds is friendlier

MeowTseTung · 08/09/2019 16:34

Always struck me to be a very vibrant happening place, good restaurants, venues, nightlife, football , very student-oriented too.

Simonsaysitschristmas · 08/09/2019 16:47

Leeds is amazing for students. Headingley (the area most students live in during 2nd/3rd year) is ace too. Got a big enough Sainsbury’s local to get your shopping, lots of nice bars, pubs and restaurants and it has the cricket and rugby stadium so always something happening.

Leeds city centre is really good too. Lots of funding in the past few years means there are lots of opportunity to get a graduate job and stay in the area. Plus as PPs have mentioned the shopping, nightlife and restaurants are really good nowadays.

Great city with shit transport. We're the biggest city in western Europe without a mass transit system, even though they've spent decades and £££s pontificating on said matter. Also accessible to real wilderness countryside so you've got all bases covered.

The park and ride isn't too bad though.

BarbaraofSeville · 08/09/2019 17:27

The university has a good reputation too.

cricketmum84 · 08/09/2019 17:32

Born and bred in Leeds and still here now. I love it.

I drive into the centre every day and it's not so bad. Public transport system is an absolute mockery though, especially when you look at other large cities in comparison.

Great vibrant happy place, friendly Yorkshire people, loads of parks and outdoor spaces. Fantastic mix of cultures which is reflected in food and drink options (especially in the student type areas such as Headingley and Hyde park)

Of course there are some impoverished areas but name me one big city where there isn't!

Enjoy your visit!

I like Leeds. My Dad was a student there!
Good shopping, eating out, etc. Manchester is edgier, but I prefer Leeds.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 08/09/2019 17:37

Nice in the evening. Some brilliant bars and good restaurants.

I was underwhelmed by it in the daytime, but it's easy to get out by train to some lovely countryside and small towns.

romany4 · 08/09/2019 18:16

Leeds is brilliant.
Ds just finished Uni and has moved into his own place in Pudsey. Shopping is fab. Nightlife is good.
