How to cancel a direct debit?

Bear with me here, I'm newlyish divorced & for our long marriage, my ex managed all finances, so I'm learning from the bottom up. I've found I have a direct debit coming out for a mobile that was set up for my daughter but she tells me she's took over paying it herself a year ago. Clearly I need to cancel this now but I can't find any further information. How should I go about cancelling it?

Phone your bank and say you want to cancel it. Or if you online bank you can cancel that way

If they ask why, just explain the situation but they don't usually, they'll prob ask you to inform the company just say that you will.

You should also get in touch with the company to confirm why you are cancelling it and to get a refund. Otherwise they may send you some grumpy letters (even if you’re in the right).

I feel a bit flummoxed because I have no reference/account numbers & there's probably a cancellation policy.. This is the last messy thing to sort out as I managed all the rest.

How do you mean you have no bank account number?

NoUsernamesILike · 08/09/2019 11:46

If you have online banking you should able to amend a direct debit (mine is listed under manage direct debits - its lists them all and the last payment date and a X which I can press to cancel the direct debit)

Summinandnothin · 08/09/2019 11:47

No, I mean no reference number or details for the phone this debit is paying for. There must have been a set-up contract at some point.

Won't your daughter have those details as she is now paying it?

Todaythiscouldbe · 08/09/2019 11:51

You don't need a reference number for the phone. If the DD is active, call your bank and cancel it, or you can cancel on online banking too.

nearlyfinished1moreyear · 08/09/2019 12:07

@Todaythiscouldbe exactly this

Redglitter · 08/09/2019 12:10

I can cancel Direct Debits on my phone app. You dont need reference numbers etc

jay55 · 08/09/2019 13:09

You need to call the phone company if you and your daughter have been double paying for the account.
And cancel it online anyway.

Summinandnothin · 08/09/2019 13:20

Many thanks all!

If your daughter took over payment then they should have switched the direct debit to her and stopped taking money from you, so something has gone wrong somewhere.

You need to pinpoint the date that double payments started, contact the phone company and ask them to refund your payments. Your daughter will have to do this if the contract is now in her name.

Gingernaut · 08/09/2019 13:25

You've got a Direct Debit for your account.

If you've got the app for the bank, go to Payments and Transfers, highlight the DD you want to cancel and it should give you the option to cancel it.

If not, go to a branch and cancel it there.

ellzebellze · 08/09/2019 13:26

Ask the bank for a copy of the original direct debit mandate that was sent to them.

That should have more details on it.
