Can I lease a car with no licence?

My test is on Thursday. Hopefully I pass! It's come to my attention that you can actually drive a car as if you would with your full license without actually having the license in your hands (it gets sent off for).

Does anyone know if I can go and lease a car from a car dealership with no license (but obviously having passed my test, just waiting for the physical license).

I'm guessing not really? And I suppose you couldn't test drive without it as they'd have no evidence you aren't going to kill yourself and whoever is accompanying you on the test drive Grin

I know the car I want and I'm eager to have it ASAP. Travelling around without a car is extremely difficult so it would be nice to just have it before the license arrives.

Even if you lease a car it won’t be ready straight away. I’ve had a few new cars on lease and it normally takes a month for paperwork, car to arrive from manufacturer and taxed/insured. The only thing you might struggle with is getting accepted for the drive away cover if you’ve only just passed

No. When I got my leased car they wanted to see my licence and photocopied it.

It took about three weeks from application to delivery of car to process all the paperwork. You don’t drive away with it there and then.

beahunnywashyourtummy · 06/09/2019 13:04

Thank you - I thought I might be able to drive away with it that day if they had what I wanted in stock

I shouldn't have thought so. You will probably have had to have held your licence for a year first.

beahunnywashyourtummy · 06/09/2019 13:09

So someone leasing a car who has just passed will have no idea what it actually feels like to drive that car, they'd just have to lease it and take a chance? Shock

Are you really sure that you want to lease a car as a brand new driver? They will charge you for any damage when it goes back and you could be landed with a large bill. Do you need the worry of driving a car around that isn't actually yours?

StayInYourLaneBoy · 06/09/2019 13:13

When we last leased a car you had to have been driving for two years

beahunnywashyourtummy · 06/09/2019 13:13

ami Yes because it's cheaper for me to lease a brand new car than buy an old one and insure it myself.

I get the leased car on the notability scheme so I don't actually pay for insurance etc, it's all included

*motability

I bought a car on finance as a learner, not much dearer than leasing.

LenoVentura · 06/09/2019 13:15

No, you won't be able to rock up and lease a car. My lease car took around three weeks to come and that was expedited because they had it in stock. They have to wait out the 14 day cooling off period on the contract if nothing else.

Walnutwhipster · 06/09/2019 13:16

You thought you'd get to walk away with it that day? the day you passed your test! How old are you too? There's usually an age limit aswell as minimum time for passing your test.

Nottobesoldseparately · 06/09/2019 13:16

Do you mean lease as in hire purchase/pcp?

If so, ring the dealership as soon as you pass and ask them what their protocol is. I can't see anyone turning a sale down.

Comefromaway · 06/09/2019 13:17

You'd test drive a similar car.

Walnutwhipster · 06/09/2019 13:18

Motability makes it a completely different story. They will want to see your licence and it takes about 2 weeks if it's in backstock but can be months, especially if it's an automatic.

No, not the day I passed my test. Around a week later, providing they had it in stock. I thought you could sometimes take them home same day if it was available on the day.

I wasn't aware this was certainly not the case

From the dealership. They usually have about one of each model car they use as demo cars for test drives That way customers don't rack up the mileage on the actual new cars. After a while they sell them off as used cheaper than a brand new (I've bought 3 ex demo cars including my current one)

amusedbush · 06/09/2019 13:36

I test drove a car without showing my licence (which I thought was a bit dodgy) but as others have said, I had to present it when buying my car on finance. They took a photocopy for the finance company.

BarbaraofSeville · 06/09/2019 13:37

Have you looked into how you order Motability cars? It might not be the same process as a private sale as the cars might be supplied centrally from a favoured supplier.

It's also likely that you'll have to wait some time for a car to be supplied, especially if you need an autobox or any adaptations, although if you can be more flexible, as in you'll take any medium sized estate car (for example) with no colour/trim etc requirements. Some cars can take literally months to arrive.

Sorry if this isn't what you wanted to hear.

Or is it possible for Motorbility to supply you with a loan scheme or you buy an older car privately until your own Motorbility car can be supplied, if it is going to take a while to come?

Comefromaway · 06/09/2019 13:37

I don't know if you can test drive on a provisional licence mind you.

TheRebelAlliance · 06/09/2019 13:40

Do you need a licence to get a notability car? My DN has one and she cant drive.

Raphael34 · 06/09/2019 13:45

Where is everyone leasing their cars?? My oh leases cars regularly. He goes to one of the local dealerships, sees what’s available in his price range and has driven away with one immediately. There’s never been a wait at all, let alone weeks. When he gets ‘bored’ of the car he takes it back and leases another one. Depending on the dealership you don’t necessarily need to have had your license for a certain amount of time either. One dealership he goes to will lease a car to anyone with a license as long as they are 25 or over. I will say that they have all requested to see his license though. I don’t think you can lease a car until you’ve actually got it
