Can I lease a car with no licence?

beahunnywashyourtummy · 06/09/2019 12:40

My test is on Thursday. Hopefully I pass! It's come to my attention that you can actually drive a car as if you would with your full license without actually having the license in your hands (it gets sent off for).

Does anyone know if I can go and lease a car from a car dealership with no license (but obviously having passed my test, just waiting for the physical license).

I'm guessing not really? And I suppose you couldn't test drive without it as they'd have no evidence you aren't going to kill yourself and whoever is accompanying you on the test drive Grin

I know the car I want and I'm eager to have it ASAP. Travelling around without a car is extremely difficult so it would be nice to just have it before the license arrives.

We've had two Motability vehicles and it's been 3-4 months wait each time. You also need at least twelve months left on your award when you apply.

nononever · 06/09/2019 13:52

I thought you could sometimes take them home same day if it was available on the day.

No, there are formalities to complete before you drive a car away. We once got a car within a week only because the exact model we wanted was sitting on the showroom floor.

As for someone saying their relative has a Motability car but no licence, that is all very well but they personally will not be legally allowed to drive it. They must have a designated driver.

Sidge · 06/09/2019 13:59

I've had 3 Motability vehicles. Delivery time has been between 6 and 20 weeks, depending on the dealer.

You can lease a Motability car if you don't or can't drive, but need a designated driver and they aren't allowed to use the car for their own personal use. It has to be solely for the use of the person eligible for DLA/PIP.

They don’t just have stocks of new cars in the plot, they have to assign number plates/register it and do checks on it once it comes in. Also cars cost a lot -since the recession they don’t just manufacture loads and loads.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 06/09/2019 14:21

I bought my car outright and it was sitting on the forecourt as it was a used car. Still didn’t get to drive it away the same day I first claimed it. Took about a week for everything to come together.

Karkasaurus · 06/09/2019 14:22

Yeah it's different rules for motability drivers.

duffyluth · 06/09/2019 14:25

If you have the entitlement to use the motability scheme you can go now and look/choose/order your car. You don't need a license to do this.

BishopBrennansArse · 06/09/2019 14:25

Motability takes weeks. All has to go through the DWP it's a nightmare

duffyluth · 06/09/2019 14:25

But yes you don't need to have the actual licence to be able to drive after passing your test. You carry the paperwork about with you until the license arrives.

mistermagpie · 06/09/2019 14:37

I think people confuse leasing with pcp or other ways of buying a car on finance. We've leased a number of cars and it's never been the case that you walk into a dealership and take home whatever car is in stock and then bring it back when you are bored or fancy a change. The contexts for private leasing are quite strict and dealers are unlikely to have exactly the car you want in stock, mine have always had to be ordered.

Motability is even more complicated I think, so no you wouldn't drive it home the same day, especially with no license.

dancemusicsexromance · 06/09/2019 14:52

You can lease a mobility car in your name with a provisional. (My son has) so the car can be ordered if the second driver has a full licence. We waited 12 weeks for the car. We just took his full licence in once he had it to change the driver status.

StayInYourLaneBoy · 06/09/2019 16:00

I get the leased car on the notability scheme so I don't actually pay for insurance etc, it's all included

Massive drip feed! Our Motability car took three months.

ChicCroissant · 06/09/2019 16:05

Good luck with the driving test, OP!

Have you spoken to the Motability dealership? They may be able to let you know the potential timescale.

stucknoue · 06/09/2019 16:18

With motorbility there's still a time gap, why not pop in and ask???

beahunnywashyourtummy · 06/09/2019 16:28

I've spoke to someone really lovely on the phone. He said it's very possible to get the car within 2-3 weeks, providing I'm not too fussy about adding fancy extras.

He also said the car being auto may also contribute to the wait time but possibly not. If Vauxhall have it in their stock then it should again be 2-3 weeks hopefully and he will do his best to see what he can get quickest

But to answer the original question, yes I do need the license at the time of going in to order the car

Oh that sounds positive - hope you fly through the test, OP!

duffyluth · 06/09/2019 17:20

No, you don't. They should have been able to clarify that on the phone. Lots of people have mobility cars and don't drive

bigbluebus · 06/09/2019 17:46

duffyluth that is true but the named/designated drivers have to have a driving licence. The OP wants to be a driver of the car so she will need to have a licence at the time of ordering so that the dealership can note the details on the Motability paperwork. I have had 5 motability vehicles on behalf of my DD - she has not been capable of driving any of them - DH & I were the designated drivers and I was named on the paperwork as the appointee even though the mobility allowance was awarded to DD (who did not have the capacity to sign paperwork)

I have also waited a few months for each car even though they were manual transmission.

Karkasaurus · 06/09/2019 17:52

They should - or they did - provide courtesy cars when you were waiting, if there were any issues. Apologies, OP, it's been a long time since I had any professional involvement in this (pre-Brexit and general Conservative nastiness), but it seemed that Motability customers were very well taken care of with respect to any issues when I was.

duffyluth · 06/09/2019 18:49

No she does not. She can name a driver. She can order a car.

Then you must know that OP can have a motability car without holding a driving license.

ThisMustBeMyDream · 06/09/2019 18:56

Re: leasing. My car is a lease. Went to Arnold Clark. Saw the car I wanted. 2 hours later, I drove away with the car. Not sure why others have had to wait so long, but I certainly didn't. They said the only delay would be if there was an issue with the finance. There wasn't. So I got the car there and then.

beahunnywashyourtummy · 06/09/2019 20:31

duffy Not sure if I've included it in the thread but the car is for me to drive, not someone else.

I don't have a names driver to put on and get the car sooner etc. So I'll just have to wait for the licence and then I'll pop down there when I get an appointment with the Motability specialist

Yes you did. I was just making you aware the option to name a driver so you can order your car before your test is available. That's said your test is so soon it won't make much difference if you wait anyway.

lilypips · 06/09/2019 20:51

You don't need to wait for your licence. Once you have passed your test you can go.

beahunnywashyourtummy · 06/09/2019 21:00

lily the Motability man said I couldn't order the car without the license :(
