What do you use as an alarm clock?

Smartphone, radio clock, or the old-fashioned kind with bells on top? Or are such things unnecessary in your house with children running about?

I usually use my iPhone, on the other side of the room. (As a child, I remember being scared of alarm clocks, especially traditional wind-up ones - the menacing ticking, the numbers glowing in the dark, and of course the alarm itself.)

I have a fitbit flex 2 which vibrates to wake me up. I find it less jarring than a traditional alarm, and all other electronics are kept downstairs.
Failing that, I just ask DS2 to wake me up. He's always up by 6.30am.

I used to have a real old-school alarm clock with the ringing bell on the top. Woke every morning with my heart pounding so hard I thought I was having a heart attack!

Then I tried the radio. Music radio was too loud and shouty. So I tried Radio 4 but the news first thing is too depressing.

So now the kids just wake me up. Then I have to wake DH as he sleeps like the dead

Usually my fitbit and if it's important I get up I set the Amazon echo too. I find it less jarring than the bedside clock beeping.

In winter I have my bedside lamp on a timer too so I'm not trying to wake up in the dark and that comes on 30 minutes before I need to be out of bed.

I just wake up (far too bloody early! - about 5:30)

But if I’m travelling or have a meeting etc first thing I’ll set the alarms on both my iPhone & iPad otherwise I won’t sleep for fear of over sleeping DESPITE not sleeping past 6am for god knows how long 🤷🏻‍♀️

@ - what’s your problem? No one HAS to answer your question and why shouldn’t we say iPhone? That’s what it is! ‘The phone’ is our landline 🤷🏻‍♀️

One of my exes thought a teas made would be a brilliant idea. Well, if he meant being woken up by splashes of scalding water emitted from a gurgling monster right by your ear hole would wake you up pretty sharpish and then you'd be faced with shit tea made with too much lukewarm milk to be drinkable at any time, I suppose he was right to some extent.

I'll stick with the sunrise doobrey-wotsit.

FusionChefGeoff · 06/09/2019 21:39

I've built my teasmaid a little shelf so it's not too close Grin and the gentle gurgle is a nice sound as it means my tea is coming!!

I put my milk in a Peppa Pig milk jug from DDs playset as it's the perfect size so I can add exactly the right amount.

ExpletiveDelighted · 06/09/2019 21:49

Doesn't the milk go off overnight? I'd have to put it in a flask to stop the cats getting at it.

CherryPavlova · 06/09/2019 22:08

The trouble with a teasmaid is you have to make the tea and fad about preparing it the previous night. A tea husband is better.

SunshineAngel · 06/09/2019 22:34

I always set my iPhone alarm, but tbh I've always woken up pretty reliably at around the right time, and I don't even know why that would be the case!

Stravapalava · 06/09/2019 22:53

I use my Android phone. I have a tone that doesn't sound like any ringtone or anything. I find it easy to get up though, so I pretty much jump out of bed as soon as I hear it.

Digital alarm clock

Barbara I've had the same Lumi for about 6 years and have never had an issue with it keeping time. How disappointing that you've had those problems, as it really is such a nice way to wake up.
