What do you use as an alarm clock?

Smartphone, radio clock, or the old-fashioned kind with bells on top? Or are such things unnecessary in your house with children running about?

I usually use my iPhone, on the other side of the room. (As a child, I remember being scared of alarm clocks, especially traditional wind-up ones - the menacing ticking, the numbers glowing in the dark, and of course the alarm itself.)

My fit bit but im usually woken by dh's phone first

megletthesecond · 05/09/2019 19:17

A radio alarm with radio 4 on one side.
A lumie sunrise wake up alarm on the other.

I have a Lumie which makes waking up bearable, but I don't use the alarm on it. I use an old Nokia mobile for an alarm. I don't take my phone to bed with me, too distracting.

Lweji · 05/09/2019 19:21

Land-line cordless phone. It's basically what it's for these days.

YesQueen · 05/09/2019 19:24

Sleep cycle on my phone plus a cheap sunshine alarm clock. I sleep very heavily!

diddlesticks · 05/09/2019 19:24

A child or the radio, I don't like other sounds to wake me up.

YesQueen · 05/09/2019 19:25

My cat is useless as an alarm clock. If he finds me asleep then he just curls up under the duvet next to me and carries on sleeping Hmm

Bluntness100 · 05/09/2019 19:25

I'm also paranoid about one failing so always set two. So Always my phone in case of power cuts, then either my actual (electric) alarm clock or Alexa.

Bear2014 · 05/09/2019 19:25

My 2 year old. Before that, his sister. Apart from when catching an early flight I haven't set one for 6 years

InglouriousBasterd · 05/09/2019 19:31

Alexa playing R4 gently 😄

MrsMozartMkII · 05/09/2019 19:32

Three big dogs, two of which like to give a friendly "Woof!" to let me know it's time to start the day, only they're often thirty minutes early ConfusedHmm

ClashCityRocker · 05/09/2019 19:33

Dh has a phone alarm that goes off at the last possible minute I can still get ready and go to work, but generally I wake up an hour beforehand anyway. The odd occasion I've slept until this it's left me disorientated and groggy all day.

Mittler · 05/09/2019 19:34

Two things. My mobile phone (a 15 yr old Nokia, which makes an annoying noise if I set the alarm just before I go to sleep). Plus, as back-up, a radio alarm clock. I have teenagers, who need waking up at 5.50. Though I'm normally awake anyway, unfortunately.

wanderings · 05/09/2019 19:34

Lots of variety! My cat would wake me at 3am if he had his way - he's banished downstairs at night because of this.

@Ginfordinner Why couldn't you say phone instead of iPhone? Because if I'd said "phone", people would have thought I meant a phone with a dial. Wink Like Adrian Mole, I like to mention brand names: not a Walkman, a Sony Walkman; not an orange, an Outspan orange, and like other posters have said, not a sunrise clock, but a Lumie.

Phone, kindle, clock radio all set at slightly different times. I usually start coming to before the first one rings then I get up and turn the others off.

Next week I'm changing my work pattern so I only need to set my alarms for 2 mornings instead of 5. So excited.

Crinkle77 · 05/09/2019 20:07

I use the alarm on my phone.

origamiunicorn · 05/09/2019 20:10

I say to myself I want to wake up at X and I do.

RangerLady · 05/09/2019 20:12

I mean realistically DD 20 months but we have the radio turn on. DH has set it to radio 4, it's so fucking boring it gets me moving to get away from it.

Ginfordinner · 05/09/2019 20:12

OK Wanderings
A Samsung Galaxy phone in my case Grin

Soola · 05/09/2019 20:13

We both naturally wake up early but my husband always sets an alarm on his phone on business days.

homemadecommunistrussia · 05/09/2019 20:16

oragamiunicorn's method usually works too, but I don't like to risk it.

YaySeptember · 05/09/2019 20:22

We use a bedside digital alarm clock. It's about 10 years old now but there's no point in fixing what ain't broke.

If we took our smart phones to bed we wouldn't get any sleep.

PancakeAndKeith · 05/09/2019 20:22

Phone, Apple Watch, sometimes google home. I also sleep with the curtains open so the sunrise helps.

NoWordForFluffy · 05/09/2019 20:22

The vibrate on my Fitbit so I don't wake the world at 5.30. My iPhone is set for 5 minutes later in case I sleep through it / I've forgotten to charge it!
