I’m lost! Does anyone know what any/ all parties want as an outcome of this huge, tangled mess?

Does this mean no one else understands either?

The problem is that even within parties they don't want the same thing.

Tories: Leave anyhow, leave only with a deal, remain
Lib Dem: Remain
Labour: JC ultimately would rather leave, though many of his MPs largely remain.

If there was a majority there wouldn't be all this indecision.
They can only agree on what they don't want.

RedForShort · 04/09/2019 21:29

Tories have made a mess of Brexit, they want a general election as they won't win, then Brexit will became someone else's problem and ergo fault.

Oh and apparently one of May's withdrawal deals has to be re ayed and no'ed - as there wasn't a teller on the nos.

I think boris johnson has drummed out or suspended all his opponents and is now trying to get a no deal brexit. I don't know who wants a general election apart from jeremy corbyn who thinks it's his big chance.

Thank you for starting this thread OP, I am also confused and feeling very thick Blush

Anasnake · 04/09/2019 21:48

Lots of shouting, a fair bit of head shaking, Bojo swearing, JRM lolling about, IDS picking his nose

TeamUnicorn · 04/09/2019 21:51

Trouble is it is ever shifting sands - which doesn't help me with my head stuck firmly in the sand.

I do wonder if one of my local MP's (my previous MP before I moved a mile down the road) who is firmly in the Leave 'camp' actually believes it is for the best or is just standing by what the constituents (overwhelmingly) voted for and feels that he has to honour that.

TeamUnicorn · 04/09/2019 21:52

So just an average day in parliament then? Wink

Vikki69 · 04/09/2019 21:54

Absolute rubbish

Howmanysleepsnow · 04/09/2019 22:26

I struggle to unpick what anyone actually stands for. All I hear is criticism of the “other” point of view... but no one clearly stating what they/ their party believe. I am so confused!

Irrespective of what people voted for, this IMHO is destroying the public’s trust in Parliament I.e. if you won’t let us have a vote one way or another via a GE, why bother voting in the first place ? 😳😳😳😳

YorkieTheRabbit · 04/09/2019 22:40

Unfortunately, parliament has become occupied by wankspangles. Think that just about sums up the situation.

TwatCat · 04/09/2019 22:42

I think somebody needs to explain TO parliament, in idiot terms, what's going on in parliament. Because the problem is that they don't even know what's going on.

BackforGood · 04/09/2019 22:45

Simple Politics is very good at explaining what is what.

If you are on FaceBook, you can like them too and you get notifications into your feed, explaining what is going on and why it is significant, whenever there is a development.

They aren't related to any parliament so is all factual and objective, not subjective or biased.

PrettyShiningPeople · 04/09/2019 22:47

I don’t blame you OP, it’s a full time job trying to keep up with this shit!

Bluntness100 · 04/09/2019 22:50

Boris wants to leave. With our without a deal.
He has a minority government, he is 42 short of a majority, so cannot prevent anything or make it happen. As he doesn't have enough MPs to vote it through or vote against it,
Labour wish to either leave with a deal or stay.
SNP and Lib Dem want to stay full stop.
They have all joined together to prevent boris taking us out with no deal.
As Boris can't get anything through Parliament due to his lack of MPs,he has sought an early election to see if he can win more MPs to increase his power in the house.
All parties have clubbed together to stop him.

They are worried he will move the date of the election if the no deal legislation doesn't get through the House of Lords. That he will make it after brexit instead and take us out with no deal, as he has prorogued parliament,
So they are refusing to agree an election until the legislation has royal assent. At least,,,until then.
Boris is refusing to say he will comply with the law, if it is passed in the lords, that he needs to seek an extension, the other parties may hold off on an election until he actually does it.

It's actually a big mess. Parliament goes to recess on Monday, until mid October, they cannot sit. They cannot under take any business in parliament, they will be shut down,
Boris will try again to get an election agreed by Monday,
As he has prorogued parliament he has to get it agreed by then, it's made his life harder as he has a tight time frame.
As has the fact he fired 21 of his own MPs this morning, thus giving him less ability to do anything. The other parties know this, so although they are not in power, between them when they act together they yield it and control parliament. They are all fairly united on what they want. A good deal or to stay,

The whole thing is a mess,

Hadenoughofitall441 · 04/09/2019 22:51

Nothings changed, they all still a bunch of wankers....paid far too much for debating with no frigging results. It’s like watching a bunch of kids rowing over thier fave footie team. Useless assholes...

PatriciaHolm · 04/09/2019 22:56

I'll try...

  • in an attempt to avoid crashing out with No Deal on Oct 31, the opposition put up a bill that will force the Govt to go to the EU and ask for an extension past oct 31 to 31 Jan 2020 if no progress on a deal has been made by Oct 19 (Boris has to get Parliament to agree to a deal or to No Deal). The explicit intention is to avoid No Deal. However, it does of course have bigger implications as we are likely, soon post Oct 31, to have a General Election; if Labour/Coalition win, we could end up with another referendum and potentially no exit at all.
  • the bill passed Parliament, after 21 Tory MPs voted for it (and have now had the Tory Whip removed, so are effectively no longer Conservative MPs and cannot stand as such in the next election)
  • The PM then submitted a vote for a General Election, but he needed two thirds of MPS to back him and failed. The thinking is that had he succeeded, he would call an election pre-Brexit and he would win (especially as he can now replace the rebel 21 with loyalists) and thus would get to push through No Deal, so Labour abstained from the vote
  • the bill is now with the House of Lords, where it will take several days to pass as the Tory lords will attempt to talk it out (they probably won't manage it)

So - at present it looks like the Bill will be passed at the weekend. So Brexit will almost certainly not happen on Oct 31, as the chances of Boris getting the EU to renegotiate something acceptable by then are low.

Of course, the EU itself could scupper everything by refusing to extend.....!

mummmy2017 · 04/09/2019 22:56

You forgot Macron has said he wants it to finish so could also cause no deal...

Terriere · 04/09/2019 22:57

They are not 'all wankers', many of them are trying to protect the country from serious self-inflicted damage

It's not exactly a party issue so that's why it's so complex but overall - Tory position is that they want to leave but only with a good deal
Labour position (after an epic wrangle) is that they want to remain
Libdem are more solidly remain
SNP are remain
Greens are remain
Today Parliament voted to prevent us leaving on 31st October without a deal.

Johnson tried to get round this by asking for a vote on having a General Election on the 15th October but was voted down
That means Johnson will now have to ask EU for another extension.

ZenNudist · 04/09/2019 22:58

Boris Johnson has arranged to shut down Parliament for a historically long time in order to give less time for MPs to avert a no-deal brexit before 31 October "Brexit date". MPs responded by passing a bill superquick that will avert a No Deal brexit. 21 Tory Rebels that voted in favour of this Bill have been ejected from the Conservative Party and are now standing as independents. Which goes to show that when Boris Johnson wants to rebel he can do but anywhere else wants to he tells them all to f off. The bill still has to receive Lords assent which is hopefully going to happen tonight.

Boris is arguing that taking No Deal off the table is bad for a negotiating position which makes no sense seeing as the Europeans don't think that he wants no deal either.

I think Boris is saying that he wants a general election because he thinks he will win as Corbyn is completely toxic and parliamentary arithmetic is stacked against the Lib Dems.

Corbyn would like a GE because he's deluded and thinks that he can win ( he can't) but Labour Party strategy is that they have to avert the Threat of No Deal first because otherwise Boris will use the hiatus whilst Parliament is dissolved for a GE to force through No Deal Brexit by default.

Sarcelle · 04/09/2019 23:00

Following. Fucking confused. Fucking David Cameron.

Lima45 · 04/09/2019 23:01

Thanks for this thread. I've been trying to follow what's going on but I keep getting more and more confused!

NataliaOsipova · 04/09/2019 23:02

OK. This is inelegant, but here goes.....

Boris Johnson wants Brexit by 31 Oct even if it means No Deal.

Labour, Lib Democrats, SNP do not want to leave without a Deal.

Boris Johnson has got the Queen to give Royal Assent to prorogue (shut down) Parliament for 5 weeks (note she really has to act on advice of her PM). People are very dubious about his reasons for doing this and don’t trust him. Last night there was a vote to take control of the legislative agenda today in order to pass a vote to prevent no deal. It won as it was supported by 21 Tory rebels. They have now had the whip removed (been chucked out of the party, basically) and another Conservative MP has gone to the Lib Dems.

Today the vote passed to take no deal off the table.

BJ then tried to vote to call a general election. Because of the fixed term parliament act, this requires a two thirds majority. This is a bit tricky for Labour as they’ve been yelling for a general election for months, but they really can’t allow it before this act has passed to take no deal off the table as an option. Hence they abstained....so the “yes” vote for an election won, but not by a big enough majority.

Boris wants an election because he thinks he can win under the first past the post system (a party can win a large majority of seats with only c. 30% of the vote). He thinks this will make it easier to force through Brexit. Labour MPs know they won’t win under Corbyn, but are a bit stuck because the party membership elected him.
