I’m lost! Does anyone know what any/ all parties want as an outcome of this huge, tangled mess?

We are not educated about our political systems in this country - the majority of people just about manage to turn out for an election (those that can be bothered) and otherwise don't take much notice and I include myself in that.

Brexit has been a great education for me and i'm glad of it, these are momentous times, people will still be discussing and studying these events in 50 years.

Seahorseshoe · 04/09/2019 23:44

Jeremy Corbyn is a hypocrite who wants to dodge a general election. I'm sick to the back teeth of it all.

Patroclus · 05/09/2019 00:10

Thanks god we avoided chaos with Ed Milliband....

Remember the times when the big issue of the day was if we would be getting I.D cards when everybody knew we wouldnt anyway?

I’m no fan of Corbyn; this mess has been massively exacerbated by his own arrogance and incompetence. If we’d had a halfway decent Leader of the Opposition, we might have found a way through this mess a long time ago. He’s sat on the fence for so long, he has splinters in his arse. He should go for the sake of the country....

BUT I think he’s absolutely right not to fall into Johnson’s election trap. It isn’t in the interest of the country to force through a no deal Brexit and it will hurt the Labour heartlands the most when the shit hits the fan. “Get the Bill through first and then bring it on” seems one of the most sensible strategies they’ve ever articulated.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 05/09/2019 08:08

There have been some very good explanations here

I understand it, but I certainly couldn’t explain it as well as others on here

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 05/09/2019 08:10

Absolutely!

See how good that was, I couldn’t do that...I’d just blether for half a page and then merail

Manontry · 05/09/2019 08:13

They are not 'all wankers', many of them are trying to protect the country from serious self-inflicted damage

Thank you terriere!

OnlyTheTitOfTheIceberg · 05/09/2019 08:20

One of the other reasons for Labour refusing to vote in favour of a GE before the No Deal bill is passed is because there is no confidence that Johnson would not simply say “actually I think 15 October is too early, it shall be 7 November instead” by which time we’d have crashed out with no deal by default.

Although I can’t think why Parliament doesn’t trust the Right Honourable gentleman to keep his word... Hmm

Manontry · 05/09/2019 08:26

I wish Labour was upbeat and confident about a GE though Sad

The whole thing is so depressing.

Sux2buthen · 05/09/2019 08:27

"People will still be discussing brexit in fifty years"

Yes after another extension no doubt Grin

NataliaOsipova · 05/09/2019 08:40

Why would they be? They won’t win under Corbyn. And the first past the post system means that the Conservatives may be able to win a majority even with only c. 30% of the vote. Tactical voting is going to be absolutely key here....

Bellasblankexpression · 05/09/2019 08:42

There's a good account on Instagram called Simple Politics which puts up posts for every development and explains them really well.

PerkingFaintly · 05/09/2019 08:57

Yes, this.

Boris and some of his pals, like Jacob-Ress Mogg (the guy lounging nearly flat on the House of Commons benches), want us to crash out with no deal because it will benefit the rich and powerful like them – while harming the ordinary people.

Boris is aware there's never been a majority for No Deal Leave among voters, hence all his theatrics: waffly twaddle in Parliament; the pretence he's about to come up with some magical amazing deal with the EU (he isn't); proroguing Parliament to prevent discussion while the clock runs down.

What you're seeing now is Parliament stopping a would-be authoritarian forcing through something harmful for the country and for which there is no mandate, regardless of how dramatically he tantrums.

I think it's a mistake to bring personalities into it. No matter who was leader of the opposition they'd be subject to the same broadly pro-Tory anti-Labour agenda of the media, with the exception of the Guardian and the Independent (as todays papers show). Even it it emerged that there was a Tory cabal devoted to killing puppies and throwing the bones out of the window, if there was a story about Corbyn blinking at the wrong moment, it's be the headline.

As it is, keeping a fairly low profile has left the headlines to spotlight the absolute fist the Tories are making of everything they touch.

bluetongue · 05/09/2019 10:39

I’m also rather befuddled by it all watching from here in Australia.

How many times is the Brexit deadline going to get extended? There must come time they all realise there’s other issues parliament needs to focus on and say no more delays, with or without a deal.

JeannieW · 05/09/2019 10:52

Absolutely love swank spangled, takes over from clock womble as my favourite term of abuse

JeannieW · 05/09/2019 10:53

Sorry meant wank spangle

Manontry · 05/09/2019 10:55

I hate Corbyn and Labour.

I half expect the tories to be self serving bastards, but this Labour party is even worse as theyve done fuck all to challenge them.

LarkDescending · 05/09/2019 11:00

*No more delays, with or without a deal”

That may be easy to say from Australia, bluetongue, but we in Blighty are the ones who would have to live with the consequences. The Government’s own planning documents (which they have tried to keep under wraps, but which have been leaked) paint a very alarming picture in which they contemplate confiscating property, imposing travel bans and deploying the military in order to contain civil unrest once the scale of disruption of a no-deal exit becomes clear. It is not only Remainers who are alarmed - even the right-wing Daily Mail ran a piece on 3 September on the perils of No Deal, having seen leaked documents.

The present administration has already demonstrated its authoritarian leanings - we are now in September and due to crash out in October and almost unbelievably it is closing down Parliament for 5 weeks of the remaining time so as to run down the clock. These are genuinely scary times.

mummmy2017 · 05/09/2019 16:12

It is actually only 4 days extra. But 5 weeks sound more impressive to project fear.

NataliaOsipova · 05/09/2019 16:18

I agree. But the problem with Corbyn is that he is an extremist. And unelectable. This makes him a great opponent for the Tories. He is also anti EU...but for the opposite reasons of Rees Mogg and his crew. For the hard left, the EU is all about business; they’d prefer the “Lexit” often talked about. And this is why the Labour response has been so vague and half arsed.

GlamGiraffe · 05/09/2019 16:19

My 17year old sons opinion:
Kick them all out. Replace them with lots of mums who have more sense of organisation and sense. Get a few men who pass the test of not being unreasonable mysoginists. You need some professionals in businesses such as law and accounting and people who can follow the directives not just to what they want.

I was incredibly impressed with his logic.

mummmy2017 · 05/09/2019 16:24

Corbyn has lied to our youth, and now they know it
So why will they believe him now .

BonnesVacances · 05/09/2019 16:45

It is actually only 4 days extra. But 5 weeks sound more impressive to project fear.

It's now actually 5 weeks when no parliamentary business will be taking place (prorogation).
Instead of a similar period +/- 4 days when the party conferences are on and parliamentary business still happens (recess).
Usually the MPs would be given the option of voting to cancel the recess to focus on Brexit, but on this occasion Johnson decided to prorogue parliament instead.

But it's actually only 4 days sounds more impressive for fake news.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 05/09/2019 16:48

Exactly bonnes
