Is this woman winning at life, or a dirty rotten thief? Pointless straw poll!

DH and I saw this earlier in a hospital cafe and had a long pointless discussion over it, so naturally I need to know what MNers think Grin

Cafe has three tiers of sarnie: cheap ones (cheese/houmous/coleslaw), middling (ham, chicken tikka) and expensive (prawn, can't remember what else)

Procedure is you order your sandwich, it's wrapped in a bag and then you take it along the queue to the till where you order drinks etc. Till person asks you what sandwich you've got and you pay.

Woman in front of us ordered a prawn sarnie with extra salad and coleslaw. Takes it to the till, is asked "what have you got?" and replies "Cheese". Pays the cheaper rate.

Is she a cheeky sod? Or is it fair enough? I have too much time on my hands

The server needs to put a sticker on the bag or some indication of its level of contents. It's not a good system at the moment.

ZiggyB · 02/09/2019 19:04

Sad but I’m sure she’ll be justifying it to herself

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 02/09/2019 19:09

surely at some point they have to stock take and realise that they have 43 empty prawn tubs overflowing from the bin, 17 GIANT catering blocks of cheese in the back of the fridge, yes they have apparently sold 94 cheese sandwiches and not a single prawn one.

Dec2019mumtobe · 02/09/2019 19:09

Thief/cheeky/selfish

That'd really get my goat. Imagine if several people regularly did this? The prices would have to go up. Rude.

popehilarious · 02/09/2019 19:11

Hope you logged it with 101, OP

You’d think

gowgow · 02/09/2019 19:14

She took advantage of a glaring fault in the system.
It's still theft, & needs to be prevented - quite easily.
I'd inform the Chief Internal Auditor so s/he can take corrective action, or at least tell the manager what is happening.

HermioneWeasley · 02/09/2019 19:14

Thief, but (is apparent from this thread) people justify it to themselves that it’s somehow “ok”. It isn’t.

Derbee · 02/09/2019 19:15

We all pay higher prices to cover CFs like her. I’d have told the staff once she left, so they’d at least know to keep an eye out if she’s a regular

gorrisandhorace · 02/09/2019 19:15

The chief internal auditor !!!
This is escalating quickly.
After that
The prawn ombudsman.

ellzebellze · 02/09/2019 19:18

Liar and a thief.

Write to the chair of your local NHS Trust and tell them. If she's doing it, then loads of other people probably are too, and they really need to tighten up the system.

Shockers · 02/09/2019 19:18

I think the glaring fault lay within her.

beanaseireann · 02/09/2019 19:19

Dishonest
Thief

gorrisandhorace · 02/09/2019 19:21

Or then there’s always MI5 or MI6.
Even I think there’s a 7 now, but I’m not sure which one deals with prawn theft?

listsandbudgets · 02/09/2019 19:21

Most likely she's a thief.

However, being in a hospital cafe, its possible she'd just had a bad shock or some heavy medication (or both) and didn't even think about what she was saying.

Baguetteaboutit · 02/09/2019 19:24

Just can't summon the energy to care really, let alone judge. I'm always kind of shocked by the strength of feeling on MN about this stuff. I mean, it's a just sandwich, not your granny's life savings.

Worgust · 02/09/2019 19:26

Theft. Utterly shellfish of her.

At our hospital canteen (open to staff and public) you have to show what you've got in the bag or (polystyrene Hmm) box.

Plasebeafleabite · 02/09/2019 19:30

This thread will end up being a great barometer of MN posters

10% are secret admirers (this is me and OP by the sound of it)

20% are CFs who are already thinking of a cafe near them where they can use the same technique to get a similar discount on their lunch tomorrow

30% come up with alternative ingenious prawn management systems for the hospital to adopt in future

20% are appalled disgusted and shocked at
misuse of hospital funds That Could Be Better Spent On Improving Hospital Standards

10% think the hospital have it coming due to skimping on the toast the last time Great Auntie Betty was in for her piles

The remaining 10% will be the MN pescatarians soon to be making inevitable suggestions that blue bags to indicate fish product could have avoided this confusion in the first place and hopefully the hospital haven’t used the same utensils for both sarnies

AlexaAmbidextra · 02/09/2019 19:32

Just can't summon the energy to care really, let alone judge.

Baguette. So presumably you’d be equally as relaxed if a thief lifted your purse out of your bag? Or would you summon the energy to care?

Baguetteaboutit · 02/09/2019 19:33

I mean, if a thief pinched my purse and took out the differential between a cheese and prawn sandwich and put my purse back, I think I'd manage.

gamerwidow · 02/09/2019 19:35

Write to the chair of your local NHS Trust and tell them
Don’t do this NHS hospitals outsource their canteens the CEO of a hospital gives no shits about sandwich theft from a company they have no responsibility for.

CheeseCakeSunflowers · 02/09/2019 19:36

It is theft, and like all retail theft it pushes the prices up for everyone.

MrsJasonIsbell · 02/09/2019 19:37

It's dishonest. My ex tried to encourage me to lie about which train station I got on at. He was a dishonest twat!
