Hit and run on my car

Miracleon34thstreet · 01/09/2019 19:17

Eugh. As title suggests. I was in a hit and run today. City centre.

I was in the car (just) in process of shutting the door and heard a huge bang and crash and car sped off. Fortunately I shot out and got the numberplate. There were also witnesses. Called police none emergency and reported, with witness statements too.

Insurance notified.

Apparently the police will visit me at home tomorrow. Suppose I'm just posting as freaking out a bit and wondering more about process/ any advice?

Bad damage to my car door, which is now all twisted. Given the shout and bang, and fact the car sped off, I've no doubt they didn't know what they'd done...

The fuckers! Hope you're ok OP. Let your insurance deal with it.

Miracleon34thstreet · 01/09/2019 19:24

Thank you... I'm very fortunate! They did confirm that the number plate and type of car I gave matched with database, so hopefully once police visit me they will pursue and get them for this. They were also spending in a 20mph

Winepoured to calm nerves, just trying to understand more about how this goes from here from anyone else unfortunate enough to have experienced, too

I think, whether the police press the matter or not, your insurers will pursue them for the damage. Assuming they were insured of course.

Soola · 01/09/2019 19:26

Have you checked the number plate?

Miracleon34thstreet · 01/09/2019 19:29

Yeah, numberplate checked @Soola thank you SO much for sending that. Provides such piece of mind

Miracleon34thstreet · 01/09/2019 19:53

I think the only concern now is whether they could have been in a hire car..

OP posts:
Miracleon34thstreet · 02/09/2019 20:55

How quickly should the police attend?

OP posts:
Nicknacky · 02/09/2019 21:02

There is no timescale, unfortunately appointments are made then frequently have to be cancelled because there is no one free to attend.

Miracleon34thstreet · 02/09/2019 21:06

@Nicknacky just worried they won't catch the other driver

I realise that seems selfish when there are much more worthy causes than me, just feeling the injustice of a hit and run

The police have to give them 24 hours to go to a police station and report the incident themselves. After that it'll be classed as a hit and run. It's very good you got the reg though so hopefully all will be sorted with insurance.

Poor DH's car was written off in a hit and run 3 years ago. Never found out who did it and he lost the car and his no claims. Angry

pumpkinpie01 · 02/09/2019 21:14

Well done for getting the witness details that can make all the difference with an incident like this.( I work in insurance if you want any advice )

Miracleon34thstreet · 02/09/2019 21:14

Thanks. I'm just cheesed off at it.

Your poor DH. That's awful

Miracleon34thstreet · 02/09/2019 21:15

Thanks @pumpkinpie01 what should I do now? Pat my excess and claim back? I e said to insurance I'll wait until I get police report then they can get driver, hopefully

They've confirmed ref and car details tie up and it is insured

OP posts:
pumpkinpie01 · 02/09/2019 22:02

Your insurers will apply for the police report and write to the witnesses you just need to give them all the information you have. Have you got legal cover to recoup your excess for you ?

TreacherousPissFlap · 02/09/2019 22:36

I'm the least pedantic person in the world usually, but can we please call it a failure to stop? A hit and run is when you hit a person.

Miracleon34thstreet · 03/09/2019 02:17

@TreacherousPissFlap ffs. No need. Take the your pedant ways elsewhere.

FairfaxAikman · 03/09/2019 02:28

Be prepared for both the insurance claim and police to take some time OP.
I was hit in May. My insurance was resolved within a month, but only because I have a dashcam (a friend who was in a hot and rum two months before me is still waiting on her claim being resolved) but my criminal case is still ongoing (only just been reported to the PF).

TreacherousPissFlap · 03/09/2019 05:00

Suit yourself, you wouldn't call a knife a fork though would you?

Miracleon34thstreet · 03/09/2019 07:04

@TreacherousPissFlap glad to see you're taking glee in being a general pain in the arse.

OP posts:
Miracleon34thstreet · 03/09/2019 07:05

@FairfaxAikman thanks. My ignition was not on so nothing recording, but hope by having witnesses and the car being insured it can be pursued...

Peony99 · 03/09/2019 07:12

Don't be a twat treacherous.

OP sorry this happened to you, I know it can be really scary.

I was in a friend's car where this happened a few years ago and the police came round the next evening. They were really kind and helpful.

FairfaxAikman · 03/09/2019 07:16

@Miracleon34thstreet mine has a setting where it starts recording if it detects an impact.

PrayingandHoping · 03/09/2019 07:28

Hope it all works out smoothly for you

My concern would be the car was stolen and that's why they didn't stop which would cause an insurance issue. Really hope that's not the case

I think this is a fair point. From the heading, I thought a person had been hit but fortunately it's only a car.
