What are the best Christmas Markets in the Uk? We have been to York, Sheffield and London.

Snowy

A stall in Manchester was selling a job lot of Lidl large, decorated gingerbread hearts (I know because they had Lidl labels on the cellophane) for £6.99. They cost £3.99 in the Lidl a couple of streets away.
People were buying them 😂

@Glitterpearl thanks. I live in Wicklow so it's only a couple hours drive for me

me and son in law are all about christmas, we just love it, Bury St Edmunds market, just dont bother! its bloody awful, crowded, full of over priced tat, last year was so crowded you couldnt even get to some stalls, we were just pushed along with a tide of other pissed off people, gave up, went to pub and made a pact, never again will we come to this hell on earth! @jo10000
We absolutely loved York. Especially going down Shambles. It was very busy but for us it just added to the festivity.

Another who loves Bath BUT it's sooooo busy it's hardly enjoyable.

I took my dcs and DM and DF one year on the train (thinking we were clever not having to park). The train was rammed, the market was so busy we couldn't move let alone see any stalls. We had to queue an hour to get the train back to Bristol. It was actually fairly miserable.

Will there be any German markets this year after Brexit?

Were there any before ? Apparently most of the stalls in Brums "German Market" were actually Romanian .....

RosesAndRaindrops · 01/09/2019 12:34

I love the Leeds German Christmas Market Smile

SpoonBlender · 01/09/2019 12:43

They're all the bloody same now, no character at all. I've been to about ten in the last five years, scattered around the country. Same little wooden hut stalls. Same sausage vendors. Same beer vendors. Same gluhwein vendors. Same pancake vendors. Same tat vendors. Same flavoured coffee vendors. Same fudge vendors.

I've seen the same stalls at other fair type events too, so I'm pretty certain they just travel around the country.

I do like a nice long German sausage or two though, which is why I keep trying them despite being prefab identikit now.

Leeds is nice, it’s only small but it stops the repeating stalls. Plus I quite enjoy shopping in Leeds.

We like York I always feel festive after a trip to York.

Wasn’t a big fan of Manchester too spaced out and repeating stalls.

TheFatberg · 01/09/2019 12:55

Another vote for Lincoln. Lots of local stalls and a sensible one way system.

jo10000 · 01/09/2019 13:35

Thanks OP, think l will try York this year then.

Bath is lovely but can be ridiculously busy, even the local trains getting to Bath are standing room only on the first weekend!

Ginfordinner · 01/09/2019 15:09

IMO the best Christmas market is the Kelham Island one in Sheffield. It isn't a German market but a proper Christmas one held at the beginning of December.

Ginfordinner · 01/09/2019 15:09

The Leeds one is mainly food stalls.
