My car was in an unreported crash but it was in the garage at the time.

Help.
We've just come home from holiday to a letter from the Met Police saying our car was caught driving without due care and attention and failing to stop and exchange particulars/ failing to report a crash.

This happened whilst the car was undergoing repairs under warranty at the dealership.

Because it was a warranty repair we have no paper trail and can't absolutely prove we collected the car the day after the offence. All we have is a phone trail.

The car is fine. No scuffs, dents or scratches.

(The offence happened in Central London and we live 60 miles away)

WWYD?

I would assume your plates have been cloned. This happened to me except it was the insurance company not the police-I just told them it wasn’t me. I would assume the garage would support you in saying where the car was-unless they were driving it (unlikely).

DamnDinosaur · 31/08/2019 22:27

The garage will have a record of the repairs.

EskewedBeef · 31/08/2019 22:29

Ask the garage to give you the car's repair record - there will be one.

If it is any consolation, a vehicle belonging to a relative in northern Scotland was caught speeding on the M25.

Luckily he could prove the tractor in question had never been further south than Aberdeen and certainly wasnt capable of 90mph.

CointreauVersial · 31/08/2019 22:48

The garage will 100% have job sheets and so on to prove that your car was with them on that day.

Longlivepenguins · 31/08/2019 22:50

Lol at the tractor tale. However, the world's fastest shed broke the record at 101mph so these days, you just never know!!

Reveal brilliant!
I'm hoping it's a cloning incident.
We had to get a bit strong with the garage to fix something under warranty that they were trying to wriggle out of.
My paranoid brain is saying this is their payback Confused

101 were helpful, but annoyingly, we have to sit on it till offices open on Monday morning.

Thanks for your replies everyone.

Our plates were also cloned while we were abroad. Are there photos? We had photos of ‘our’ car crossing the dart ford tunnel/bridge? Same car as ours but different bumper colour. Took us a while to recognise it!

mynameisigglepiggle · 31/08/2019 23:24

The police need to know who was driving. All you need to do is tell them it couldn't be you as you were on holiday. Presumably you can produce paperwork etc to prove that. Then tell them the car was in the garage and they can make their own inquiries from there.

GrimGirl · 31/08/2019 23:29

As well as proving the car was in the garage gather evidence that you were on holiday.
Passport stamp, etickets, hotel confirmation, purchase receppts, babk statementz, even holiday snaps/social media entries etc.

AlanThePig · 31/08/2019 23:43

No use for this incident, but buy yourself a distinctive sticker and put it on the back of your car. Makes yours much easier to spot of it is cloned.
