Seitan bacon! You get it in the chilled section in Sainsbury’s. Fry it really crispy and it totally hits the spot.

mumderland · 31/08/2019 21:57

Morrisons have vegan bacon

Diemme · 31/08/2019 21:58

Vivera bacon pieces are amazing.

thestarvingcaterpillar · 31/08/2019 22:01

This isn't Bacon from Ocado or Holland and Barrett is AMAZING! You will never crave bacon again!

plantsplantsplants · 31/08/2019 22:06

I didn't like the seitan bacon in sainsbos, it was absolutely nothing like bacon. Quorn smokey ham-style slices fried worked quote nicely as part of a cooked breakfast but wouldn't have made a good enough bacon sarnies. I figure the predominant taste with bacon is salt and the texture is chewy, so maybe some salty/chewy combo might hit the spot?

ContessaLovesTheSunshine · 31/08/2019 22:07

For the taste, bacon flavour rashers (crisps) from Sainsbos.

confusedandemployed · 31/08/2019 22:08

I went to a restaurant in Cardiff called the Greazy Vegan the other day. Ordered a vacon double cheeseburger, the fake bacon was lovely.

underneaththeash · 31/08/2019 22:24

Maybe your body is craving bacon for a reason?
Vegan diets are massively lacking in iron...i wouldn’t Suggest eating bacon as it’s not very good for you (like veganism), but a nice chicken sandwich may quell the craving.

MitziK · 31/08/2019 22:34

A 'nice chicken sandwich' won't cure a craving for bacon. Bacon is completely different in texture and taste.

In this case, I think it's necessary to look for something that is savoury, fatty, salty and can be crisped up, possibly with a smoky, paprika/barbecue flavour and served just the way you would normally have bacon, such as in a roll with lettuce, tomato and ketchup. I think cooking it in coconut oil would help the flavour and mouthfeel, too.

Or eat bacon. Solves the craving and then go back to being vegan again. It's up to the OP whether she is comfortable with that or not.

@underneaththeash Nothing wrong with a well-planned vegan diet, according to the NHS! And a well-planned vegan diet is also not lacking in iron...

Absolutely correct, because of the drug I am taking for MS I get a full blood panel done and more every month and all my bloods are normal including Vitamin B12 that I'm constantly told by non-vegans that I will be deficient in, also my cholesterol and triglycerides are excellent.

If you are graving bacon it's likely salt or the smokey taste you miss!

theoldtrout01876 · 01/09/2019 16:36

vegan magic bacon grease

Tastes exactly like American bacon. My vegetarian daughter used to fry eggplant in it and eat like a proper BLT. I am not a vegan or a vegetarian and I can attest to it tasting like bacon, well whatever you cook in it tastes like bacon, not sure what the actual stuff tastes like

yogima · 01/09/2019 16:43

I had a bacon alternative once, coconut bits cooked with liquid smoke or something. I swear it gave the same feeling. It was crispy, salty, fatty. Not great for you but filled that need for the same flavour.

yogima · 01/09/2019 16:45

I'm not sure how to do links but I'll try....minimalistbaker.com/easy-coconut-bacon/

yogima · 01/09/2019 16:45

Oh sorry it's not a clicky link

Really? I must complain to my surgery, as any blood tests have come back with absolutely no deficiency of any vitamins/Iron! They must have lied! Shock Or there is the possibility you have no idea what you’re talking about. Hmm

PotteringAlong · 01/09/2019 16:49

Just have a bacon sandwich. I promise we won’t tell anyone...

Deathraystare · 01/09/2019 16:50

Interesting how many vegans and veggies crave bacon. I never missed meat anyway, did not actually like it, especially pork, used to make me nauseous and the smell of meat cooking does nothing for me but I know that a number of vegans and veggies do crave it.

formerbabe · 01/09/2019 16:52

Sounds like you're craving animal fat.

There's a reason for that

S1naidSucks · 01/09/2019 16:53

I never craved bacon, when I went vegan. I think people get it into their head that they’re ‘supposed’ to crave bacon, because it’s such a big joke to some meat eaters.

FoxFoxSierra · 01/09/2019 16:54

Echoing the advice above to lightly fry the Quorn smokey bacon slices. I was never really into bacon when I ate meat but that is delicious and I've cooked it for omni friends who love it too
