I'm watching some athletics on BBC2. Why on earth do they have someone dressed up as a 'mascot'? Is it a sort of job creation scheme?

It entertains the crowd (children particularly) outside of the 'action' of the sport.
Most major sports have them.

Mascots bring great pleasure to children and adults.

I can’t stand football but somehow grown men dressed up in ridiculous animal suits getting pissed off with each other, tickles me!
