Children's cough mixture that actually helps, anyone?

Gdd, 4, has a cough that disturbs her sleep. Boots pharmacist suggested Junior BronchoStop which cost £6, and I can't see that it makes the slightest difference.
Any suggestions?

I'm pretty sure that there has been much research to show that cough mixtures do little to cure a cough, I'm afraid.
It should just settle/pass, but if it doesn't seem to be improving after 5 days seek medical advice.
Is she otherwise well and how old is she?

Here.

Not a doctor - but I was under the impression that a medicine which helps to cough up phlegm should be given a few hours prior to going to bed so it has time to get rid of what's on the chest iyswim rather than just prior to going to bed. If it's not a productive cough then Buttercup syrup is as good as anything else in my book

I find the best thing to help a cough and cold is good old fashioned honey and lemon.

This mite sound daft but my mum used to heat up lemonade in a pan, and serve it as a hot lemon drink. I do it for my grandaughters now.

I found the calpol one actually really helped DS's cough. I can't remember the actual name but pretty sure there's only one. He was coughing so much he couldn't go to sleep and it eased him enough for him to fall asleep. Great stuff!

Try a spoonful of honey. Cough medicines don't work, as mentioned above.

I was told by a pharmacist when DD was little that all the effective cough medicines had been banned because they were consistently abused to make kids sleep. So now there aren't any available in the UK that work...

FWIW I've tried a lot of them on DD who has a cough for about 6 months a year and nothing has ever worked.

SparklyMagpie · 30/08/2019 16:47

My pharmacist told me a couple of years back that it's a waste of time as they don't actually do anything.

I feel for her though :(

When DD has a cough we used a humidifier in her bedroom, it helps so much. Ours was £30 from argos.

Has anybody tried bronchostop junior for a bad chesty cough? My 19 month old has tried antibiotics and it's not clearing, she's shad t ages and can't sleep through rh night. Been giving her dry cough ones b fore bed to try and soothe it but I want to try and clear it. Will the bronchostop help as irw advertised for chesty coughs too?
